June 23, 2008 at 5:40 pm #130041I know it is plain status quo why Internet Explorer (IE) still dominates . This is mainly because IE is the default browser in every PC, notwithstanding the efforts of the European Union (EU) the monopolistic behavior of Microsoft. As part of its goal to force the world to look according to Microsoft, the company decided to revise their scripts so that it is not exactly compatible with universal standards like html, java, etc. Not satisfied with the the Microsoft scripts becoming the defacto standards, due to sheer dominance of PC and IE, Microsoft lobbied hard also to make their scripts accepted as the offical standards
No, this is not another disgruntled rant nor an anti-Microsoft simply.
However, you join any group involving scripting and the internet (e.g., webpages) and a very common cause of headache are problems associated with IE. Examine any script you use, and more than likely, the script, the CSS are crowded with ways to work around the problems encountered with Internet Explorer (IE).
Joomla and joomla templates are similarly hampered by the decision of Internet Explorer to create scripts that do not conform completely to accepted html and java standards. Just look at the repeated posts about IE problems,
The question to ask: Do we just grin and bear it?

June 23, 2008 at 9:39 pm #255660IE6 seriously sucks . . . IE7 isn’t all too much better.
I hear that the upcoming IE8 isn’t anything to write home about either.
Seriously, what is Microsoft’s problem?

Webmasters and webdevelopers should unite and support a campaign about the dirty secret of Internet Explorer (IE). And, provide alternatives to their readers — open source browsers that comply with accepted scripting standards. I use Camino mostly right now. I downloaded the lastest Firefox but it does not open up at all in my old G4 iBook. It is good I kept the old version.

Hi Tom,
For Mac users, they stopped with IE6, and it freezes on me when the cache is “full.” So, I decided not to bother what they did after that. So, I don’t know how my sites look like in IE.
I hope that companies, like Joomlart, still take the pains though to ensure compatibility. I do not like the idea, that we have to be conforming to the power of IE as the dominant webbrowser. However, if it continues with its ways, it might get left behind.
Nothing lasts, as they say — even the monopolist lose their power. This is the lesson of history.

I understand Menalto,
I used to do it myself. I got proficient with it, but I hate the idea that I should waste too much time.doing it. I generally did not have problems with the other browsers. Sometimes there are some minor with Safari, but not as bad.
At least now, with CMS becoming more popular, they try to “workaround” the eccentricities of IE.

Just a heads up. The following are the browsers stats as far as what people are using since the first of the this year. I think as a web designer that is absolutely foolish to not know or care what your website looks like in IE browsers. It most likely that over 50% of the users visiting your websites are using some version of IE (probably more). Take a tip and go to browsershots.org and find out what your sites look like in all browsers. Make the necesssary adjustments to your sites so no one is clicking to leave your sites as fast as they can. I check mine almost weekly just to be sure all areas are looking as they should. It is a bottomline responsibility of any good web designer to know how a website performs in all browsers.

:((I’ll try and dial in from an internet cafe one day and take a peek in IE7
Personally, I’d be happy if everyone used Firefox 🙂
Unfortunately, these are the stats from my site:

June 24, 2008 at 7:03 am #255737Actually, I just asked the group that I helped (pro-bono) create their website. They like the latest Joomla 1.0x -JA Teline II version even if it is still just quite new, over the previous versions — original JA Teline and another using the Gavick Pro,
The latest report is that the Joomla 1.0x -JA Teline II looks the same in Firefox and Internet Explorer (PC). I know it works in Camino and Safari also.
However, one extension that I added, Simple Image Gallery (SIG) PRO, does not display the gallery images in IE but shows in Firefox, Camino and Safari.

Hi bigrk, many thanks, would love if you could check the site on a PC for me!
Currently I get this in IE6 on Mac:
This one is the top of the page:
This one is the bottom of the page:
And lots of other horrific stuff in between! :((
For instance, this type of thing:
URL of the site ‘under construction’ is here:
http/;//www.joomla.questbg.comI hope you can report back it doesn’t look that bad under Windows! 😉

June 24, 2008 at 2:54 pm #255841Go look here in an hour or two and you will see how your site looks in all the different browsers:
http://browsershots.org/http://www.joomla.questbg.com/In IE7 everything looks fine except your Directory of Services picture is too big to go with your text in that box.
I just looked at the link and several screenshots are there already.

June 24, 2008 at 5:04 pm #255876Chris,
Considering you have started only more than a week ago, the page has progressed nicely — except for the vanishing modules you posted in another thread. The observation of bgrk confirms what my friend told me last night as far as the JA Teline II itself in PC using IE.
They like the Teline II compared with the original Teline or the Gavick. There are features however of the Gavick that I cannot replicate yet on the Teline II, so they want to keep the Gavick site too. The Shout Box is there also.
