I have searched this In General and This forum no results. Sorry if I am posting in a wrong place. But this place fits my topic.
Can I customize the Ja_Purity template that comes with Joomla 1.5 and use it for one of my clients?
I want to change the look, colors, images, header size, menu background, and change the layout a little bit, use the Suckerfish Menu and The text size tools and use it for my clients site.
I have been designing sites but this is my first time to use Joomla for making sites. I am learning how to design my own Joomla template but there are a lot more things left to learn.
Modifying and customizing the Ja_Purity template seems to be very easy. But it is not easy to make a new template from scratch. That’s why I was thinking, for now I can use the default templates to design sites. Until I master designing my own Joomla Templates.

December 11, 2008 at 9:03 pm #282431Yes you can freely use Purity for a clients website. And you can modify it in any way you wish EXCEPT removing the joomla copyright from the source code. You can put whatever copyright you want on the front end (web page).
As far as I know… Purity is no longer managed or copyrighted by Joomart.
Congratulations on making the move to Joomla. You will never look back.
December 11, 2008 at 11:52 pm #282486scotty! 😀 No kidding? YAY! Are you sure? Seriously?
Thank you very much, scotty! I love Joomla! You made my Day, buddy! Let million angels be around you everyday!
Now I can go ahead and make the site for my client! I was worried, that I should have to create template from scratch, I looked at it and it’s not easy at all, need to learn it first. I have been reading Joomla Template Design Tutorials. It takes time. I am eager to learn and make my own templates.
I won’t remove any Joomla copyright from the source code for sure.
Thank you, scotty and JoomlaArt!

December 12, 2008 at 12:28 am #282490There are many many free Joomla templates available. Some good, some not so good. Purity is now packed with Joomla and as such comes under the terms of the GNU General Public License. This means you can modify it but if you redistribute it you must say that is it modified and, as I pointed out above, there are certain comments in the source code which can not be removed.

Are you sure? I wouldn’t have thought you could redistribute it? That doesn’t seem fair to Joomlart

December 12, 2008 at 8:37 pm #282680Yes I’m sure. You can also sell it. As Joomlart and all other template clubs do with their quickstart versions.
From the Purity templateDetails.xml…
<name>JA_Purity</name>
<version>1.2.0</version>
<creationDate>12/26/07</creationDate>
<author>JoomlArt.com</author>
<authorEmail>webmaster@joomlart.com</authorEmail>
<authorUrl>http://www.joomlart.com</authorUrl>
<copyright></copyright>
<license>GNU/GPL version 2</license>
Note no copyright but licensed under GNU/GPL.From GPL Licence agreement…
( you can find this in your Joomla root directory)We protect your rights with two steps: (1) copyright the software, and
(2) offer you this license which gives you legal permission to copy,
distribute and/or modify the software. If you read the whole agreement there are certain terms and conditions attached if you plan to redistribute it. For instance you must state that you have modified it. You can not remove certain comments from source codes. And you must leave the GPL license intact.
That doesn’t seem fair to Joomlart
Purity was designed as part of a template competition run by Joomla.org. The ‘prize’ for this competition was to have your template included as part of the default Joomla install. Joomlart knew when they entered the competition that the winning entry would be released under the GNU/GPL and they would have no further control or ownership over the template.
The real prize for Joomlart was massive, and I do mean MASSIVE, advertising within the Joomla community. The competition got amssive exposure on Joomla.org and their name is now written into every install of Joomla (including quickstart versions from rival template clubs).

February 10, 2009 at 6:09 pm #290496I “upgraded” purity from the Joomlacode SVN repository. I was having multiple bugs in IE6/7 and was having a rough time going through each of them to work em out so I decided to upgrade first and then work on them. The upside is that the upgrade fixed all my bugs, and the site seems to load A LOT faster, woohoo! The downside is that now I don’t have a top menu, boooo.
In the new Template Manager menu I selected SuckerFish, but I still don’t have a top menu.
