Is there a component for Joomla that allows one to designate various categories from which the user can build a product? – Kind of like Dell or HP does with building a custom computer. In other words, the user will select the first level category – say “guitars” …. which would bring up the next set of choices specific to that category – and so on, and so on.

Hope I’m making sense.

This is quite a sostificated component, it is a kind of form component where you can ask the customer question about what he want using text box, radio, checkbox, dropdown list.

You may want to look at form or vertical market extension
