Is it extra slow because of all the images? should i be re sizing them? does the template have a mechanism to do that for me?

In any web site you shouuld provide your images at the size you wish them to appear otherwise the rendering engine (browser) will spend time resizing to the embedded code size. many ppl fail when providing images at highest camera resolution. many massive 2400×2400 px images then are resized to a sensible 400 x400px but take 40 seconds to do so. so resize before you upload to take the strain off the browser

For images, here is recommend settings in K2 parameter: http://static.joomlart.com/images/templates/j25/ja-lens/userguide/k2-image.png
