The demo shows 12 sections. If I use fewer, there is a huge gap of white space before the footer. Is there a way to ‘shorten’ the front page so that I need fewer sections to fill the front page?

Just get away (unpublish) the modules on the right side you do not need.
In the Demo the right column was specially filled-in with different modules to match length of the section part.
