I installed the JA Anion Quickstart package from a local directory.
The Joomla configuration succeeded without special events.

When I access the home page, the following error is received:
    Server error
The website encountered an error while retrieving http://myserver/joomla/. It may be down for maintenance or configured incorrectly.
    Here are some suggestions:
    Reload this web page later.
HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error): An unexpected condition was encountered while the server was attempting to fulfill the request.

If I make any of the other templates such as Beez2 or Milkyway the default template, all works fine.
I also found out by chance that I can access other pages such as ‘Colors’ (…/joomla/index.php/colors)
I have 2 more test installations on the same machine, configured almost identical, of Joomla 1.6 and Joomla 1.5. This give me more confidence that the issue is related to JA Anion.

Any ideas what is causing the issue and how it could be resolved?
    Thanks.

To work out what an internal server error is the servers logs need to be looked at. It could be using too much memory for example. Take a look at the logs for the exact time the error occurs and post them here so we can take a look.

Cleared the apache2 error log, restarted apache and then clicked refresh on the home page.
Those are the contents of the error log:
    [Mon Jan 24 00:23:44 2011] [notice] Apache/2.2.16 (Ubuntu) PHP/5.3.3-1ubuntu9.3 with Suhosin-Patch configured — resuming normal operations
[Mon Jan 24 00:24:19 2011] PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function curl_init() in /var/www/joomla/modules/mod_jatwitter/jatwitter.php on line 334

Nice and simple then. It shows that you do not have php_cURL enabled on your server. Either enable it in apache or from the Joomla module manager disable the ja_twitter module and you will be good to go. The twitter modules uses cURL so if it is not present it causes the problems you are experiencing.

Installed php_curl and the home page loads.
Nice and easy – thanks a lot!
