Confused on how I can get the boxes to look like they do on the template preview (or what it looks like in the image i posted)

Those are 4 custom HTML modules located in user9, user10, user11 and user12 position, you should create custom HTML modules and add following code into content section of each module and assign to each above position.

+ User9:

<p><img class="no-caption" src="images/stories/demo/sam-14.jpg" border="0" align="right" /> Maecenas nibh congue justo est adipiscing elit mauris orci lacus dui. Nibh justo elit nunc Pellentesque malesuada leo nascetur.</p>
+ User10:
