Not sure why, but I installed JA Highslide and the template gets broken. When I unpublish it everything is fine again.

I tried to use a different directory ( images/ ) for the default thumb directory and it was breaking the layout. I then discovered that the sub-directory I was referencing in the syntax ( action/x.jpg ) wasn’t in the images/ directory!

I moved the action folder into the images/stories/ directory and all is well 🙂
