I am seeing this message:
Warning: mkdir() [function.mkdir]: Permission denied in /home/961/alk/www.a-l-kennedy.co.uk/public_html/joomla/modules/mod_janews/helper.php on line 106
At the top of one of my JA News articles.
I’ve gone into the specified folder and files and changed permissions but the error message remains

February 12, 2009 at 9:40 am #290848It may not be caused by that folder, but the plugins folder. Verify all your joomla folders are set to writable where needed;
Go to: Admin CP -> Help Menu -> System Info -> Directory Permissions
All of those should be set to writable along with sub directories within the /images folder.
February 12, 2009 at 10:14 am #290856So all those folders listed need to be set to writable? If so, then I didn’t know that

February 12, 2009 at 11:09 am #290871Yeah, they all need to be writable – there’s a lot of holes in the joomla documentation. 🙁
February 12, 2009 at 12:15 pm #290884Have just started changing permissions and now find that I can’t get into admin [blank page] and all my content is gone from my front end. Is there somewhere where I can check the correct permission settings for joomla?

February 12, 2009 at 12:26 pm #290886Have you changed the permissions for the folders only? Do not change the permissions for the files inside.
They need to be set to 777.
I’ve attached a screenshot of one of my sites.
Make sure you’ve not moved any folders by accident also.
Grr it looks like ja automatically resize images attached. Uploading to imageshack.
February 12, 2009 at 12:27 pm #290887OK found it online. Sorry for the panic. I’ve got my content back but can’t get into admin –

February 12, 2009 at 12:33 pm #290889It looks like you’ve not set the permissions correctly to 777.

February 12, 2009 at 12:34 pm #290890I’ve set permissions on administrator/templates to 777 and although I can get to the admin opening page, I cannot enter my username or password. Instead I get the usual admin login screen but no field for username and password, just
DESCUSEVALIDLOGIN
Return to site Home Page
Aargh!
February 12, 2009 at 12:38 pm #290892Thanks for that list. I worked through it methodically and am now able to access admin. I must have had one of the permissions wrong.

February 12, 2009 at 12:49 pm #290895Not a problem. Hopefully components/modules/plugins should be a lot easier to install and configure for you now.

February 12, 2009 at 12:56 pm #290898I just wanted to mention that it is not recommended to leave the settings at 777 after you have finished working on the site as it leaves it open to intruders. It is probably best to chage it back to 755 when you are done.

February 12, 2009 at 12:57 pm #290899Very true, I forgot to mention that.
