May 13, 2011 at 12:25 am #163944I’m running a Joomla! 1.6 site for a client, using the JA Business theme: EqualityMagazines
I originally crafted the site on an auxiliary domain (MinorityRecruiting), as per the client’s wishes, and then used Akeeka Backup to swap it out with an existing site on their primary domain.
My problem is ever since I restored it from the backup, I’ve noticed that my JA Side News modules in my mega menu are pulling their newsfeeds improperly.
What’s supposed to happen:
- Item categories under “News” link to category blogs, but also contain the JA Side News module to preview the most recent articles.
- This is set up from within the menu item’s ‘(Parameters) JA Extended’ section, setting its Submenu Content to a specific Module.
- Each news genre has its own Category, from which JA Side News can pull from.
- The JA Side News module in each news sub-item only displays the articles present in its respective category.
- For an example of it properly working, see the auxiliary site: MinorityRecruiting –> News–>General News/Minority News /Veterans News/Women News/Videos
What’s actually happening:
- Despite the Modules being connected to their respective Categories in the back-end, all the JA Side News feeds are pulling from the most recent one added (specifically, the “Videos” feed).
- Characteristically, they appear to be pulling from the same Category, even they’re they aren’t set that way in the back-end.
- You can see this on the live site (EqualityMagazines) in the same place as the auxiliary one.
I’ve run some tests to try and isolate the behaviors of what’s happening. Here’s what I found:
- Making tweaks to the “Videos” menu item (ex. what module it’s connected to) affects the others.
- I know it’s not just the JA Side News module for Videos. When recreating all the menu items the same behavior occurred as soon as I had made the General News item and then the Minority News item afterwards — General began mirroring Minority. But the news items are tied to whatever was most recently made, in this case Videos.
- Trashing all the menu listings under “News” and then re-creating them has no effect. The minute I have more than one JA Side News module under a menu they start getting tied together.
- This happens under other sub-menus (About Us, Our Services, etc.)
- Uninstalling/reinstalling JA side news doesn’t have any effect. I’ve even tried manually removing it from within the database.
- Emptying the JAT3 cache has no effect.
- Setting the Side News modules to “Don’t cache” has no effect.
- Each JA Side News module does have its own Module ID number.
- This distinctly does not happen in the modules set in the “right” column. Those work fine. (example: More News box)
I’ve figured that something wrong is happening when the JA Side News module meets the mega menu-position, since the module works fine in the right-position. I know in principle this should work, since it does on the auxiliary site.
It’s possible something got corrupted in the site restore, or there’s some caching problems. But I don’t know what cache I could be missing, or where to look to try and fix it.
I’m thinking it has to do with the mega menu at this point. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

May 13, 2011 at 7:20 pm #391117UPDATE: I found what may be the cause of the problem. After going through each and every one of my components on both the auxiliary and live sites, I found that disabling Websoft.me’s Google Site Verification Plugin made the JA Side News items work properly in the mega menu.
The Plugin had been added after the site went live, explaining why the auxiliary site worked fine but the live site didn’t. Re-enabling the plugin makes the problems re-appear, and when disabling it the Side News module displays fine in the mega menu.
I presume that the plugin is somehow conflicting with the JA Side News module in the mega menu.
