I am trying to setup the JA Slideshow to more closely match the design of a similar module in this WordPress site

Hello it will take heavy custom work to make the slidshow module like you want . such custom work are our of JA support scope , you can hire a developer for such kind of customization .
you can find Third party extension on JED
