are you sure there are no problem with ja-tabs extension in the download package?
I have seen in this post
http://www.joomlart.com/forums/topic/ja-tabs-in-zone-does-not-work-on-some-pages/
that the ja-tabs module is from april 2008.
Have you changed the module in the .zip file?’
Because i have some problem with ja-tabs in joomla 1.0.x

That is problem of JA-tab for joomla 1.5, and april 2008 is date of first release
After, we update something, but don’t change that date
