Terrific…the iJoomla guys are pretty helpful.
Why not drop me a line when they are done…and we’ll get back at it.

And if you haven’t done it yet…hold off deleting JomComment until iJoomla gets finished…what I’m seeing could be caused by what they are doing and may work itself out in the end. If you have deleted…no worries…we can always reinstall later.

    Sharon,

I’ve figured out what’s going on…but I’m still a little befuddled as to how to correct it other than by using elbow grease.

    Here’s the scenario:
When a person creates a new article in TelineII and includes an image, the template not only pulls in the image, but then automatically creates up to two other images – a thumbnail and a 300px wide (usually) image that displays with the lead story on the front page or section.

When you did your migration, you pulled the images over directly…and bypassed TelineII’s image auto creation mechanism. But the template sees the story and expects there to be a thumbnail and/or reduced main section picture…and because there are none…you see no pictures on the front page. But if you dig down into the main article…you’ll see your pictures – the originals.

Now how to get around this? Well there are a couple of ways.

You could set up a Photoshop action that will batch create thumbnail images of your orginials and put them in the images/resized/images/stories folder. Then you’ll have to rename all of them to include two underscores between the file name and suffix. For instance “mcainPailin.jpg” would become “mcainPalin__.jpg”. The the template will find them.

When TelineII creates the smaller images, it includes their file size in the file name. For instance, “mcainPalin_300_150.jpg” and then records the file name in the database. But since you bypassing the TelineII resizing gizmo it has put in your database the thumbnails as just the name__.suffix.

    I hope this is clear.
If not let me know what is confusing and we’ll work through it together.

Oh my! There are nearly 3000 images for the existing articles!

I could upload all of the existing images to the appropriate directory. After that (or before), is there a regular expression or something that can rename all of the image files? It is downright mind-numbomg to contemplate manual manipulation.

The easy part is a string replacement. There is an open source batch file renamer at Cerebral Synergy that might do the job on my desktop:
    http://cerebralsynergy.com/download.php?view.55

The tough part is replacing “.” with “_width_height.” Yikes! I have no idea ho to do this.

The last step would be an upload to the target directory. Does this general outline make any sense?

Alternatively, I could switch to another template, one that does not involve any of these problems. Are all of the Joomlart templates like this?

We have been down too long as it is and really have to return the site to service.

    Thank you for your help,
    Sharon

What would it take to modify Teline II to eliminate te use of JA News and JA Frontpage, allowing the usual Joomla! Frontpage Component (and mainbody) to take over.

The way I figure it, I can get going sooner by doing this and retaining the other virtues of the template. I then can do less panicky planning for what I will do down the road.

    Thank you,

Actually the renaming is the easy part! I was thinking you would freak at the resizing workload…which isn’t that hard either but not nearly as easy as renaming.

Come to think of it…I’m thinking why do we need to rename and resize all of the images when only those that appear on the front page and the front section/category pages use thumbnails. All we need do is concern ourselves with those stories/images currently showing on the fronts. The rest are basically archived articles, correct?

So not that big a job after all…or am I missing something about the design of your site.

How’s it coming with the iJoomla guys?

I have worked hard all my life. I am willing to put in the effort if it makes sense to do so.

It would be a big job to rename and resize everything. We have nothing in archive. We do carry hundreds of science and medical articles that are, in a sense, ageless. Our users, growing ever more impatient, use them as reference.

So, perhaps the answer is to go minimal on the Front Page and Section/Category pages at first. Use links as the new articles come online and build up a base. Once that happens, I can expand the list to show the images because they will be compliant.

If that is so, then a renaming/resizing effort is unnecessary at this time. What do you think?

I created a new article tonight that carries today’s date and published it to the front page. However, I can’t see anything until we clear up the sidebars migration issue.

They are still working on it. They might be done tomorrow? If so, I can see more clearly what is going on and get back to you.

    Hello,

I have decided to change templates. Teline II, while fine as it is, but it poses too many challenges when migrating a legacy site. I have some other projects that do not involve migrating such extensive content that might be suitable for certain templates that use the JoomlArt approach..

I thank you for helping me through this process. In the end, it was unnecessary; the blame is mine for not researching my options more clearly at the outset. Granted, the documentation lacks clarity on a couple of technical points but I should have figured this out from the information available.

    Thank you again,
    Sharon

I understand that! Teline is not for the faint of heart sometimes.

Let me know if you can help further.

    John.
