    ..and I am on Ja Teline V 1.1.1 from May 12, 2017

    I see you now have Ja Teline 1.1.3, from Nov 3, 2017.

    What version of Joomla should I upgrade to, that works stable with Ja Teline 1.1.3 from Nov 3, 2017?

    Hi
    The template is compatible with Joomla 3.8. You can update the template and all other JA Extension first and go for Joomla update.
    Take a backup of the site before updating your Joomla.

    Hi The error is from your Joomla, Kindly restore the site back up and update Joomla only from components > Joomla update.

    Always take backup of the site before updating Joomla.

    from Componets > Joomla Update , and it was in the middle of this process that the 500 error happened.

    If you are getting this error again, you can set the default Joomla template as default first and disable the 3rd party extensions
    Also, if its only on the admin side, i suggest you to post it on Joomla forum as there is something went wrong during your update.
