Hi mfcphil,
Welcome to the Joomla Community. I was in exactly the same position as you 18 months ago. There is a lot to learn about Joomla BUT you don’t need to know everything to in order to get underway – in exactly the same way that you don’t need to know everything about a car in order to drive it. The best advice I can give you (speaking from experience) is STICK TO THE BASICS. If you have never installed components or anything then you don’t need to know about a caching component (keeping with car analogy – its like trying to under a direct fuel injection system before you’ve even learned about the gear stick!!). The Joomla forum is the best source of information. There are a number of threads aimed at helping beginners.

Two other bits of advice – K.I.S.S – keep it simple stupid 😉 and have a little patience. SPend lots of time reading on the forums. A very large number of people have gone before you and pretty much every question you can think of will have been asked and answered before.
Good luck
Iain

Hi
Sorry for the delay in answering.
A cache component will speed up your site if you have a lot of content and heavy graphics. It does this by cacheing content on your server much like your browser does when you visit a site, and the next time you visit the site it loads faster because you already have the pages & graphics on your computer.
The component goes a little further by reducing the numbers of calls to the database which can slow down a site’s loading time if there is a lot of content.
Having written all this Martian to you, I suggest taking The TravelindDr’s advice until you gain some experience with installing and configuring components.
Good luck.Hi mfcphil,
