I have run into a similar problem before while working on a friends site. In that case, ftp the extracted files to a subdirevtory in your tmp folder and use the install from directory option. That way you avoid the upload limits.
As templates become ever more complex I can see this causing problems more and more in the future.

I had the same installation problems and…
