I currently have JA_Edenite 1.0 and would like to upgrade to 1.4 template. I have the template customized to my site. How do I go about updating the template without overwriting my existing template. Thank you in advance.

January 19, 2009 at 9:51 pm #287142I don’t think that’s possible since your using an older version.
I assume your using J1.5?What I did when I had a similar issue (except it wasn’t an upgrade as much as an update since I forgot to make a PROPER backup) was create a backup of the entire template (copy it totally using FTP), install the new template – uninstall the old if necessary and then just re-upload the files I made changes to. Since the versions where the same it really didn’t make much of an issue – but I suppose if you have changed things beyond just the graphics then it could be a problem.
How far have you gone to customise it? have you made changes to menus etc.

Whenever modifying CSS, etc, always comment your changes. I use an easily-identifiable string (including my initials) at the beginning of each comment, along with a description that includes the original settings so I can revert if necessary, for example:/* @mb: Changed padding-right from 20px. */
If you do a major version change like you’re talking about at worst case you can search for your string (“@MB” in my case) and find all the things you’ve changed so you can move them to the new version of the template. Not the most elegant solution, but it’s workable.

January 20, 2009 at 4:54 am #287210thanks markb1439,
That is a good tip that I will try to remember to use in the future. I ahave also thought of documenting the changes I do, as sometimes I make changes that seem simple enough at the time and I am sure to remmeber, but as time goes, I don’t always. So documenting chages is good thing to do.
regardning the upgrade of templates. I don’t know if the upgrades are much different from the original. From what I understand, the numbers represent any new changes made, and sometimes that change, from 1.0 to 1.1 is simply that a new Joomla version was added to the template, but not neccesarily any new changes to the template itself. Sometimes bugs are ironed out, sometimes not.
Maybe a suggestion you be for JA to have update packages for the templates, so that you don’t have to reinstall or overwrite the whole template but only the files that are upgraded or chaged, in the same way that Joomla does with upgrades, like an upgrade from 1..5.8 to 1.5.9. It would require a bit more work for JA though, so I’m not sure it will ever happen, but it would make life easier for the member who need to or want to upgrade.

That’s a good suggestion. However, I don’t know if there is any easy way to address this issue. 🙁wooohanetworks Friendwooohanetworks

January 20, 2009 at 7:30 am #287256On the first look it looks like some spam attacks by some bot, only when reading the messages one sees what it is. Actually you filled my inbox with email notifications, mostly that number of messages is like from 10 members in total, now all that are replies from you…:D Actually I wonder if you get replies a lot, I will definitely stay away from posting, as the mass of content submitted from one member makes it more uninteresting for me to go through all over the messages. This from my point of view. It is your choice, to post a flood of information at once but I can imagine when you have been away for some time that you have some lots of posts to reply to…;)
