why won’t the articles on the side of the featured on at the top appear? It is just a gray space. I have two other featured articles selected and all the categories are selected. The module I am talking about is: mod_janews_fp in position sl1-l

No big deal add more articles to the categories specified in the News Frontpage Module.

Just select all category in the “Select Categories” multi select box. you will see the changes.
