April 20, 2012 at 4:58 pm #176327The Joomla Extensions Directory, or JED, has been one of the most affected areas of the Joomla community after the adoption of the new Joomla release cycle which began last year. This of course directly affects template clubs and users as well, as it has become difficult to know which extensions are supported in the new versions of Joomla in some cases.
The JED appears now to be attempting to rectify this situation by limiting the number of “badges” that will be available to developers when publishing their extensions to the directory. These badges are used to identify which version of Joomla the extensions are compatible with.
“Currently, you will see the version badges on listings for 1.5, 1.6, 1.7 and 2.5. While this isn’t ideal, it has helped developers and users incrementally move to the latest Long Term Support (LTS) version (2.5.4),” explains Matt Lipscomb in a blog post on The Joomla! Community Portal. As of April 30, this will change.
Beginning May 1, 2012, users will no longer see versions 1.6 and 1.7 supported in the JED. Also, as of April 1 of this year, the JED is only accepting “listings that are compatible with the latest Joomla STS Version (2.5).”
The blog post outlines the following as how versions will be handled in the JED:
LTS (Long Term Support) versions will be listed in the directory for 180 days (6 months) after End of Life (EOL).
STS (Short Term Support) versions will NOT be listed in the directory, instead a “Series” will included both STS and LTS versions – which means that starting with version 3.0 you will see a badge for “Joomla 3x Series” and developers, if they mark that version as available on their listing, will need to ensure that the extension is compatible with the latest release of the series.
This means….
Version 1.5 – Will be listed in the directory for 6 months after it’s EOL.
Version 1.6 – Will be removed
Version 1.7 – Will be removed
Version 2.5 – Will be listed in the directory for 6 months after it’s EOL.
Joomla 3x Series – Will be listed in the directory for 6 months after the EOL of the LTS version in the series (version 3.5)
There is the potential for many extensions to fall off of the JED when the April 30 deadline has come and gone. For many users who find the number of listings to be overwhelming, however, this could be a benefit rather than a detriment.
NOTE** I did not write this, just sharing it
