Jomsocial URL does not change by template.
if the group is associated with a menu item of Jomsocial it will open under that menu and not use system URL .
You can check the settings with default Joomla template if you found the link is not working properly , and see the result will be same.

i am not sure what is the issue , since it seems normal at my end . If menu is unpublished the page will not use that URL . Besides you can check the documentation of the Jomsocial for its configurations and post the question on Jomsocial forum if you are getting any issue in the component .
