I’ve just tried the update package on my desktop and it works fine. Unless you have made any modifications to the core package you should have no problems.

If you want to be really sure, make a backup of your site with joomlapack and test it on your desktop using wamp.

    Wamp – http://www.wampserver.com/en/

Hey Phil, Thanks for the info about 1.5.10, even i am yet to update my sites, however, i was just curious about xampp and wamp. I use xampp and haven’t tried wamp at all. Any big difference or its the same thing in different package?

They are similar but I find wamp a lot easier to use.

It seems commercial component. Is it worth putting in $ 10, any particular advantage over xampp? i have been using xampp for over 3 years now. may be if they provide trial version, it would be easier to compare.

Looks like wamp with a pre-installed joomla install. $10 seems a bit steep for what is essentially open source software repackaged.

Wamp, xxamp etc are so easy anyway I cannot really see much point in paying for something. Even a real beginner should not find wamp difficult and if they do then should they be trying to run a website?

I never heard of wampserver before and guess jsas was free when I first encountered it years ago I did pay 10 for a later version, probably I like a panel based click and move on, many ppl that I help come to joomla from a static background find it visually easier to use get you head round than XXAMP, which I tried once an found it screwed my windows install up .

Horses for courses I guess, I’ll look ay wamp and see what it does

The same happened to me with xxamp which is why I switched to wamp.

With wamp you sim[ply install the package. You then get a www folder and you just create a folder in that for each website you want. For example, for a telineii install, just unzipe teline into that folder then browse to it using the taskbar icon (click on localhost and you will see all your sites) for wamp and the site is running.

The only thing to watch is by default there is no password set for mysql. You can run like that but I would suggest setting one in phpmyadmin (which you can get to through the same taskbar icon) to firstly assist with moving sites to live servers and secondly some software installers insinst on it (joomla doesn’t).

Installing joomla site in XAMPP does involve many steps, but as you say WAMP seems easier, will give it a try today and lets see if it really works out for me too.

    thanks for the info.

I have a Sandbox, for each server. to be able to observe exactly how the update will behave. If there is no problem, I then apply it to my actual site. What is the advantage of doing it in your computer?

I usually find not problem with the Joomla part. Very easy to upgrade. It is in the Joomlart part that can cause the problem. The template was not an issue until the last update. While it is not indicated in the changelog, there radical changes in the Teline II version since the last step.
