I would like to display K2 categories on the home page and have the sidebar module (Categories) display a list of the K2 categories instead of the standard joomla categories. To my best knowledge, it’s not any problem to assign the K2 categories to the menu item ‘home’, but the problem lies in the category list. I would have to make a new module, assign it to ‘sidebar’ and make it a ‘K2 Tools’ module (category list).
This then does the job, displays all the desired K2 categories in the sidebar, but it is lacking the matching styling.

I don’t know if you have some styled modules in the works, but despite some exploring with Firebug, I’m still not sure what I would need to do in order to style this K2 Tools module to make it look like the original Wall sidebar module (Categories).

A few pointers would be much appreciated, and if there’s another way, even better !

    Thanks !

Why do you need to make a new sidebar just to show K2 categories? From what I tried, it’s possible to have both K2 and Joomla together in the sidebar or pick either one.

Here’s the steps you can try to do it.

In Menu Manager, choose Main Menu. Now you should see a list of categories options for the side.
Create a new menu item, say Test.
On your left. Set the menu item type to “Categories” under the K2 section, scroll down if you can’t see it.
Now on the right, in Basic Options, you should be able to choose the K2 category/categories you would like it to pull from.
If it’s a single category, you need to set the layout options over at the category itself.
If you’re pulling from multiple category, then set it here. Make sure the template is Ja_Wall and not default or anything else.

Now you should be able to get a wall style. If you’re seeing folders, it’s probably because you set it to single category. Just go to the category and inside category view options, set everything in Sub-category handling to hide and you should be able to see that perfect wall style you want now, pulling from K2 instead of Joomla.

    Thanks, arucardx!

That definitely works, yes, and it will be what I do when I can’t accomplish what I originally set out to do:

My question came up when I looked at the way the default style in the demo is set up:

The module in the sidebar that is titled ‘Categories’ is not a menu, but a ‘category list’.

When the home page is selected and all articles of the assigned parent category are displayed, you can then go to the category links in the sidebar and select individual categories (assigned to that parent category) while the menu selector stays at the top menu item ‘home’.

I like that little detail and wanted to the same with K2 content: assign my desired parent category to the top menu item ‘home’ and then have a K2 category list module in the sidebar that displays the individual sub-category items of that parent category.

My goal: keep that same configuration as it is set up in the default demo, but use a K2 category list in the sidebar instead of a standard joomla category list. The only way to do this, it seems, is by setting up a K2 Tools module and selecting the functionality that creates a category list. It all works as intended and I get the desired functionality, but this K2 module now lacks the styling of the standard joomla category list that was there in the first place – and while I keep trying, I have some difficulties in applying the right style.

All in all: the desired functionality has been achieved, but I haven’t figured out yet how to apply the module style of the category list module (as displayed on the demo) to the newly created K2 Tools category list module.

If it all turns out to be too difficult, I will create the menu as you suggested in your reply.

    Thanks again!
