Would appreciate an overview of “publishing” with a live host. I am familiar with the traditional approach using Dreamweaver and I have read the book Joomla! A users Guide and discussed with my ISP. The book recommends uploading the entire zip file (I presume Quickstart) and extract them on the server with a Cpanel file manager. All that I understand, BUT what about the changes we have made to various php, css files, the customisation of the template and the design changes to a couple of mysql file, plus of course the data in the tables.

    Some guidance would be appreciated

I have discussed this with my isp host and although they meet the php/mysql/apache requirements, have no experience with Joomla:confused:

Can you please provide some more information?

When i read your post it looks like you first did a installation on a localhost? As you say that you have changed a lot of files and css already?

Or you have already a working site and want to migrate to another?

We have three traditional web sites already working

However we wish to convert them to a CMS type of site. We are experimenting with Joomla/VM on localhost with a view to changing the smaller of our existing sites to CMS.

The changes we have made to php files etc primarilly relate to the presentation of shipping info Our web site is concerned with selling books. We have added some columns to the vm_product table to capture info relating to Publisher, ISBN, Author etc and we have added some code in the language file and the flypage to present this info.

In addition we have customised the template by deleting modules that are not appropriate, adding our own logo and fixing one or two problems with the template that have been discussed in this forum

We want to fully test on localhost before we go to a live situation

There are several ways you can move your testing site to a live location but IMO the easiest way would be to install a component on your test site called Joomlapack.

With this you can create a backup of your entire site and database. This backup is saved in the form of a .zip file and this zip can then be installed in a new (live) location the same way you would install a quickstart or indeed Joomla itself.

Simply upload the backed up zip and extract using Cpanel and then go to your domain and follow the install process.

What you can do is install joomlapack on your localhost test server and make a backup.

This backup will make a install package that you can compare with joomlarts quickstart.

So you are basicly creating your own quickstart file, when you are done working on your localhost, create the backup and upload it to your webshost.

Install your “quickstart” on your livehost and you have moved your install from localhost to live site.

great share. i should give joomlapack a try…. been manually uploading all my local files and using phpmyadmin to backup and restore my database. this should make things much easier

if you use joomlapack, you will need to delete what you have uploaded to the live server and create a new clean db
