I would like to have the slider module show the categories we offer, not just he products. I figure I will have to do the leg work revamping it myself but am wondering if anyone has already attempted this or have any pointers on where to start?

I think that there isn’t one do it , This is module with option is less using , Please to consult JA vmproductslide module in JA Larix package , in that module display product , you can replace it by display category , of course you must change more in code .;)
