Many thanks, I’ve never nominated it for ‘site of the month’ as I feel it’s too similar to the original quick start package … not too many mods, but the content is good!

This problem with SEF URL’s is not a Joomla bug. I paid a programmer today to go through all the code on my site and find the problem. The problem is of JoomlArt cause, the guy I paid had to modify a JA file supplied with the template.

Forgive me for not posting the solution here, but as I said, this cost me hard cash for something which should have been fixed via my 1 year membership fee to JA. Once again, I’ve had to fix problems in their template which has cost me money and which should not have existed in a release version.

    Cheers
    Chris

Just curious Chris, how exactly did you upgrade to Joomla 1.5.7?

I just did a fresh install of the latest Joomla 1.5.7-Teline II 1.5.6 (downloaded 20080917) and the SEH error was correct, here is a Demo site:

    http://treasures-of-the-internet.org/jte15x099/

In your upgrade and fix, was the JA file fixed happen to be a helper.php file?

If you started with Joomla 1.5.3 then updated to Joomla 1.5.7 (only) there was a bug fix in Joomla1.5.5, where a Teline II file had to be fixed because the Joomla 1.5.5 is a SEH update

    http://www.joomla.org/announcements/release-news/5193-joomla-155-released.html

there was a thread here providing the JA file that had to be fixed

    http://www.joomlart.com/forums/topic/caution-helper-php-error-not-fixed-in-joomla-1-5x-ja-teline-ii-v1-5/

(see links there for actual fix)

This change was documented in the changelog. This is also the reason why I advocated that the URL related to bugs and specific changes be included in the changelog, which was done earlier changes but not recently.

Its one of Joomla’s recommended extensions and it works just fine.

Best to do the modrewrite and rename htaccess.txt to .htacesss so the urls will appear more natural without index appearing after the domain name.

I followed your advice about patching J1.56 using the 1.5.7 patch. All works well too. No problems.</blockquote>

    Hi Patrick,

You do not need the SH404SEF to achieve this. Provided you started with a “fresh install” of Joomla 1.5.5 (and later)-Teline II v1.5 (and later) QuickStart Kit, even the default SEF will work. I explained in the aforementioned post the fix that must be done, or have already been corrected (see patch fix links in previous post, if you start with a QuickStart kit that is not one of the appropriate Joomla -Teline II, as indicated, herein.

    Hi Cornelio

Correct me if I am wrong :

    1. Teline has a bug regarding SEF and the bug was fixed when J1.54 version Joomla with Teline Quickstart was released.

    2. Chris used J1.53 and upgraded to J1.57 so he did not have the SEF patch and thus he suffered .

    3. If you use the latest version of Teline 11 ( with J1.57 ) Quickstart which was released by JA on19th Sept, then no problems …?

Its worthwhile to use SH404SEF as it also provides some peformance improvements to the Joomla system….

Chris..are you ok ? Did you uninstall SH404 SEF ? What you have to do :

    – Go to Global Config and then set Mod Rewrite on

    – rename htaccess.txt to .htaccess

    – enable SH404 and set it to read at root level of your site so your urls will be http://www.questbg.com/xxxx/ xxx etc
    instead of
    http://www.questbg.com/index/xxxx etc

Joomla 1.5.5-Teline II v1.5. The first release still had the bug but was fixed.

I do not know exactly what Chris did fo rhis update. (see inquiry post above). If he just updated the Joomla but did not fix the needed Teline II patch, as suggested, then he would have the error — just for the JA News.

Yes. Check Demo link above. As much as possible, I did not want to add anymore modules, so I just used the default SEF.

    Hi Patrick/Cornelio

Cornelio was correct in his supposition above … the problem was related to JA News, and the correction had to be made to the helper.php file to correct the issue.

I’m happy to say, all is working well now (for the moment anyhow!!).

    Cheers

That is not true Patrick. All I did was keep track of the key bugs and fixes. Most of them eventually came from the observations of other members and fixes done by members like Hainn, Menalto, VisitGod, Omarram and some other staff members. They are the one who deserve the credit.

The specific bug and fix stated by Chris, was fixed by Omarram. I happen to be familiar with it because I the helper.php affected was observed in Joomla 1..5.5 (an SEF improvement), and it coincided with the time when I decided to shift completely from Joomla 1.0.xx to Joomla 1.5.x.

I thought by that time, many of the key bugs that affected Joomla 1.5.x-Teline II have been more or less resolved — not all though.

    Collaborative Support Group

What we need is to compile all the solved problems, and various modifications suggested in the Forum, and present them in a more orderly manner — in the form of tutorials, How Tos, FAQs.

Also, as noted by Hung, and Hainn, quite a number of the “problems” posted in the Forum are more related to the Joomla itself, not the template. Some of them are even more basic, as noted by MJ. For examples, many layout issues, require a thorough understanding of CSS, html markups, etc.

And, as noted by MJ in a private communication, learning these technical skills take time. Many of the above issues cannot be addressed in the Joomlart forum. Thus, it is up to us to collaborate together in order for these “technical issues” to be addressed.

    To illustrate some examples:

    1. putting a border at top and below of the frontpage
    2. http://www.joomlart.com/forums/topic/putting-a-border-at-top-and-below-of-the-frontpage/

    3. How to Add coulors to Top Bar
    4. http://www.joomlart.com/forums/topic/how-to-add-coulors-to-top-bar/

are recent posted topics that are really basic CSS, and html markups topics. I have seen many similar tthreads, not only in Teline II but in other templates forrums. If I have to guess, perhaps 30% to as high as 50% (or even higher) of the total threads are related to CSS and html markups..

Since I have no background in scripting, I learned CSS modfications by trial and error. And, if you are not careful you can really destroy your site, which I have done so many times — well before I even heard of Joomla.

If you try to Google topics related to CSS and html markups, more than likely you get the “kindergarten level of tutorials for single CSS files. Unfortunately, because of the modular format of Joomla, the CSS files are all over the place. It is not easy, it took me years to master the courage to radically change the CSS of a site. Until now, because of the complexity of Joomla and Joomlart CSS files, sometimes I spend days just to track down some CSS specifications, and still could not resolve some layout features. It would have helped if the CSS were annotated properly.

So, the challenge of tutorials for understanding CSS and html markups applicable to Joomla and Joomlart template would require all users of Joomla and Joomlart template to learn the basics of CSS and html markups, so that by providing few examples (and basic internet resources), every Joomla site developer must be able to ‘answer” on their own, the questions asked in the above example.

Otherwise, if more than 22, 000 paying members ask related questions regarding CSS and html markups alone — would require more staff and time — that could be support by any template company. And this is just one of the many technical skills that each of us must learn.

The only solution that I can think to address these issues is for all those who are interested or are involved in creating websites must band together to help each other in a more collaborative setting.

To take away some worries of other members…I installed a few templates from here, the mesolite mixed with the rochea, the galena and another one, also loaded with extensions from other clubs etc. while the 1.5.6 was still the newest one.

As the new 1.5.7 came out I simply upgraded the sites and there are no kind of compatibity problems whatsoever.

Who ever thought it is a hard thing to update Joomla, no, it is just throwing the new files to the server via FTP, enabling overwriting functions and on it goes…:p

ALL Templates I use from here showed no errors after the manual upgrade! 😀
