Can the result of selecting a menu element open a pdf document? I have looked at the menu item types and don’t see one that would work for that purpose. Please advise.

Use ‘external url’ and link it to a pdf within your site; i.e. http://mysite.com/media/my.pdf and you also can set it to open in a new window or not.
