How does one migrate content from magz to magz2? It there a tool? What are the database differences?

You have not need to do the migration of DB since it only a template . You can install the JA Magz ii and assign it your menu .
The difference is in the layouts, features . In Magz II the content type work is different , you need to create new content for JA Magz II to show it like in magzii demo content with the help of documentation .

Try the process on localhost or a test domain first .
Also, install quickstart package of JA Magzii on localhost to check its settings and features .
