January 5, 2009 at 3:17 pm #136741Hello,
I have some suggestion to even enhance the forums here a bit more:
I think it would benefit the Joomlart.com community to equip the forum with some language specialized moderators that first can speak and write the english language very well plus one other language, let it be their given home country’s language like italian, french, german, danish, polish, spanish, dutch, arabic and so on and so on.
I do not refer to new forums like on Joomla.org, each one for a certain language but just to have some supervisors in the forum that members can contact or ask certain questions in their own primary language. Also when a member may be from the U.S.A., but speaks another language quite perfectly, I think this would also be some way to proceed.
This way, all those who have some problems with the english language and sometimes need some time to understand the posts when it comes to some aspects that require some key language knowledge to understand it at ease or even just to not have to use the english language when they do not speak it so well.
From what I see are some real good members inhere that are knowing a lot of Joomla, the joomlart.com templates and the community, about the memberships and also general aspects of the internet business.
Surely I also would come up my own for this job but here are some I think that would possibly be some good language moderators in the forum I regularly see posting quality answers:
bennitos – Dutch
shertsman – Spanish (?)
questbg – BulgarianI also do not want to pinpoint them in a way that they would have to do this job, but those are the ones I know about coming from countries that have their own non-english primary language. There are surely a lot more who would qualify for that job, but first it would be about if this is even possible or desired by Joomlart.com and it’s members to achieve at all.
I will definitely appreciate some feedback from other members and think this would make some bigger difference to other Template clubs and the existing strong community here.
Thanks!:)

January 5, 2009 at 3:39 pm #284744This would be a great feature to have for those that don’t speak English, although I don’t know how easy it would be to find the people willing to help in each language.
I think a lot of the unanswered threads on the forum are because the questions are impossible to understand due to the language barrier.

January 5, 2009 at 3:47 pm #284746It is a good idea, although I think it is best to first post a solution/answer in English, because most of the community speaks/understands English. This way a solution is available for the biggest part of the community.
I can speak/write English, Dutch and German if needed. 😉
With kind regards,

January 5, 2009 at 3:50 pm #284748I agree that language is quite a big barrier for quite some users, eventho i think that everyone that joins a english speaking club should have some english knowledge.
Myself im indeed dutch and from time to time i do get pm’s from random dutch people asking for help because their english is not good. Im no moderator ofcource but it is most of the time just Translate a post, or help them write a thread is enough.
For those around who have a problem with language feel free to send a pm, languages i speak quite fluently are: English,German and ofcourse Dutch.
If there are moderators who speak other languages then english it might be a good idea to keep a list so people know who they can contact in their own language.

January 5, 2009 at 6:28 pm #284754Nice to see some more than positive answers after this short time already!
Yes, it is an english speaking club but I think that there are so many people out there who really just mind posting a question inhere as they have to speak english. While I think one should always know at least the english needed for Joomla, as Joomla is also basically an english software, I see so many people out there that simply can’t speak enough of it and barely know, can’t read most of the extensions’ manuals or even the admin texts of those when those are not translated automatically into their language.
Yet, I know the ones we are, the people who can speak english enough to also translate it into other languages we know are also ambitious and do not mind helping others which is quite a positive aspect as one also could say that others must speak enough or they may simply look for help in other forums, that are in their language. This mostly goes in PMs or e-mails etc. and I also think that the posts itself should still be kept in english, what I simply mean is to have some supervisors in the forum, who do not need to have moderation rights, maybe a simple certain banner that shows “Supervisor” and next to it a flag of the language/country.
So that people who have some problems with english always see immediately there is a supervisor who speaks my language and can ask questions without to hope for that one will get an answer and does not just bother someone who also may have his business to do etc..
I think that would be some cool add on to the Joomlart.com Forums indeed and I would also do the job for english <—> german language issues!
Let’s see what Joomlart thinks about that….;)

January 6, 2009 at 5:51 am #284831I think this is a good idea. I have already assisted several members in French and even created User Guides in French, for example:
http://www.joomlart.com/forums/topic/victor-voici-comment-changer-les-bannieres-du-site-demo/
I’m always happy to help where I can be it in English or French but I’m not sure I’m experienced enough in Joomla for ‘Moderator’ status!!
:-[
Still, interesting theory and could be really helpful for people who can’t fully explain their problem due to a language barrier.

January 6, 2009 at 9:36 am #284848Good idea, I would just find that it would mean that we’re paying people when I couldn’t see it be in such high demand.

Perhaps rather than ‘Moderator’ people could be named as ‘JA Language Specialist’, and rather than payment, offer a few months extra Developer Membership or even credits?
I’m happy to help out in French wherever and whenever I can anyhow!

January 6, 2009 at 11:27 am #284864Good to hear! But I also think that a “Moderator Status” is not required for those who like to do the job of a “Language Supervisor”. What I think is that a badge on the side of the profile below the avatar like any other badge would be enough, as one must not have moderation rights to do this job and it would be easy to implement something like a link section for users to see who is a supervisor for what language, some sort of more or less prominently on any page of the forum also explaining what a supervisor would do and what he can’t do, like that a supervisor can’t directly handle account issues and also should not be asked to handle those for others, simply is not moderator but language supervisor.
The mentioned badge could simply be banner like the “Developer Member” badge with a flag on the left.
One could upload flags as avatars, but I think that is not the solution as this way every supervisor would have to have the exact same one for the language they can assist with/in to make it not look heaviely unorganized when every supervisor has some varying type of flag and so anyone could get those too and I think that is too unorganized and it should be some more professional solution for the forums and it also does not show that one is ready to assist as a lot may also mind to ask someone just because he or she has an avatar like that and still could be too busy with own stuff. That is why it should be an official language supervisor status and not just some loose thing.
Like I said, let’s see what Joomlart thinks about that…..;)

January 6, 2009 at 11:45 am #284872i can write and speak english (UK) and speak Hindi / Urdu , Gujarati as secondary / tertiary languages.
I’ve been away from JA for a couple of month due to a little one taking my time up but now i’m finding more time spare.
I think bennitos can vouch for me. isn’t that right bennitos? 😉

I never referred to get payment for this job, as now, when someone asks for help I also do not say “Hey pal, you want to get help in your language, here is my PayPal Account coordinates, now send me 10$ upfront and when I like your money, then I assist you…;)!”
I also do not refer to getting incentives or free memberships, this job would solely be purely a voluntary job, at least what I thought about is a voluntary job.
One could still place a link to the own homepage when one is a webdesigner etc. and people would automatically get interested to know more and even to get pro help when needed from someone who simply voluteers for those who can’t speak english as good as required.
Maybe this clears things up, as I would not want some payment for this, one already can work with help in the forums to get the next membership together and this is simply already a good and also generous aspect of the Joomlart.com memberships system… Thanks!
🙂What also would be some fair deal when it comes to payment, credits etc., that one just can add some line in the signature like “Did I help you with my job as language specialist here at Joomlart.com? I am not asking for anything but when you like to support my job, feel free to donate me as much you can or like in credits for it. Thanks!”
…’cause when it would mean to get payment or incentives right away, a lot of people may apply with more or less capabilities that at some instance only would get paid from Joomlart but rarely assist others. This way, with some “credits by members and also only when the assistance was profound and the members like to donate something” one gets “paid for quality” and not just for having some badge and status…;)
That there may be some members who want to abuse it from a help seeker perspective is also clear, ones that would ask for help but never would donate some credits for it. But I think one should always build on the ones that come fair, do not abuse.
