I used the “how to create a new module position” tutorial to create a “newposition” for the random image module and “newposition” does show up OK in the positions menu.

But surely there needs to be another step. Where is the newposition supposed to appear on the template? The tutorial make no mention of that step.

This entire topic of module positions is a mystery to me, so I am missing something obvious because there is so little discussion of this topic in the forums.

My overall aim is to have a random image appear above the maincontent module in Labra using the same width (54%) as main content and for the left and right columns to appear to the right of the random image and maincontent modules.

I am using this exercise to try to learn how Joomla tamplates can be modified. .

I sure could use some help with this

    Thanks

Not yet, because I am still trying to figure out from the index.php code how the locations of the different module positions are specified. Is it simply from the order that the divs are written in the index.php code?

I think that there is MUCH more learning needed for me to do the modifications I would like to make. My immediate task is to learn exactly how the different modules show up in the appropriate places.

    Thanks for the quick response.

    hi
That is difficult to learn how to add position in index.php
You can learn how to config module from positions what that template provide
You can view all position of template by view this link :http://www.yoursite.com/?tp=1
Then choose position where you config your modules to display

Your last three suggestions do not address my main difficulty which is trying to find a place that explains how the positions are determined in index.php. Yes, I have used use tp=1 to show the positions, but there are no direct specifications of position in either layout.css or index.php so the page must be assembled from the ORDER that the divs are specified in index.php, maybe simmilar to a set of children’s building blocks.

My problem is that all the explanations of how the modules are positioned on the page are so unclear.

If someone could explain how to make the user5 module (ja-topsl?) in Labra to be 54% (same as the maincontent ) and to move the left and right modules up, I think it would go a log way to helping me understand what is going on.

I’m working my way through w3schools and other places, but I have not yet found anything that helps with this problem.

But it’s actually quite enjoyable learning all this.

Yesterday, while waiting for my car to be serviced, I read more articles about tableless positioning with CSS. The solution to the problem clicked when I realised that the different modules are positioned by the use of <div> </div> tags.

I thought that I was missing a very basic piece of information and that proved to be the case. The use of <div> is such a basic part of modern web design that none of the explanations thought it necessary to mention its use.

Thanks to everyone who helped my through this learning curve. Fun stuff! :-))
