    Hi,

I have a few questions regarding Joomla’s Built-in Multi Language options.

Let’s say I want to have my site’s in 3 languages (English, Serbian Latin and Serbian Cyrilic).

If Serbian latin is my default language, should I make Mainmenu-SR-LAT as well as Mainmenu-SR-CYR and Mainmenu-EN?
Should I copy all Categories, Articles and Moduls from Language ALL to Language SR-LAT (having in mind that my site’s default language is SR-LAT)?

    Please help clarifying this.

Actually I have read it twice, but I am confused why should there be Content in Language All.
Can you please write a few words about why Language All is used and what would happened if there were not Language All?
Why should someone make everything twice for default language and for Language All?

Multi-language takes a bit of getting used to. Once you know, it is easy but at first, I agree, it is confusing. :((

MY recommendation. (Mine not JA or Joomla etc)

You must have a main menü for EVERY language. You should also have one called default.

See the flags for each? And default is well…. the default. If anything goes wrong it goes to this menü i.e “ALL”. It can be in any language but I recommend you make and pick a new menü for every language you want to show on the site.

Build out the menüs then start and concentrate on one language first. I say this because Joomla has a copy function for menüs, articles, categories etc, so once one is built you can copy it to all the other languages. Yes, you’ll have to go through each and change stuff but I this is how Joomla works. In effect you will build 3 sites. Joomla just allows you to do it in one interface to admin and visitor.

Best thing for you to do is first download and install Akeeba and then take a backup. Then start to build out one site. Everything you do; articles, menüs, modules usw should be set to this language only.

Once you have done that you can copy all elements and set them to another language. Joomla can do this automatically.

There is a great video on youtube done by hagengraf which may help.

I know a good bit about multi-language (CH-4 national languages!) if you need further help. Pavit, one of the mods, is pretty hot on this too.

    (EDIT)
Sorry. Your questions. I don’t have any content set to ALL ever. All is really only needed for the default menü and since you won’t be publishing this menü why does it need content?

I hope that sets you on your way.

Swissa thank you for your answer, especially for clarifying that I do not have to make all menu, articles, modules and components for both language ALL and for default language, but just for Main Menu.

Have you tried deleting Main Menu – ALL?
Can Website function without Main Menu – ALL?

If you have spare time, you can check out my multilingual website http://srce5.podsetnik.net/ and write a few lines about translation done (I am not quite finished with entering content in all languages yet, because I am still waiting for the client to send me content in other languages).

Just to make it clear, for anyone else reading this thread, I am using Joomla 2.5.6, JA Nex template and a few third party components, plugins and modules, but translation is done only with Joomla’s built-in translation options and no third party translation extensions.

I needed a few days to figure out Joomla’s built-in translation options, but, as Swissa said, when you get used to it, it isn’t that complicated. It actually becomes a bit boring copying menus, categories, articles, modules and components in all other languages and double checking if you’ve missed some settings.

You can delete mainmenu ALL if you want. But that would delete the ‘default’ home page and then you’d need to assign one of the languages as the default. If you follow…… 😉

The reason I have a separate default with just the mainmenü and the home page menü for this is so that I can quickly see all languages with their flags. You know then which language you are playing with. Same with adding any items – you just choose off a language not pick from 2 languages and default. You can do search on just one language for modules, articles, etc so it just makes your life easier I think.

Looking at your site you’ve picked-up multi-language well! Yes. it’s boring with going through all the copy, modules usw to assign specific languages – Like I said, you are building three sites in effect. Hard work.

    Good luck with the site!
