My front page layout has been altered. some modules are not in the same position that they were.
the page seems to be elongated, with unnecessary space.

Not sure it’s possible to help without additional information.
If the template’s files have not been modified (hacked) just re-install the template to get initial look. Modules will remain the same as before reinstall.

Please go into the template manager and set css and js optimization to “No”.

Just did that, though it hasnt changed anything…
the page still looks disarranged. but the other pages look okay, its just the frontpage.

Please clear all the Joomla caches then we can look again. Have you installed or updated anything before this happened?

I was updating an article, then i refreashed the homepage to see the changes. – unfortunately not the changes that i had expected.
i cleared the cache after it happened.
