I have an existing site niche job site with job listings (hosted by a partner, I DO NOT host the job listings, these are on a partner’s site) and a good deal of career related articles (e.g., interviewing, resume writing, etc.. Here’s a link to the site: http://www.marketinghire.com) I plan on transitioning into Joomla.

The site currently has at least 50 – 75 articles in various categories and will probably expand at a rate of 10 or more articles per month starting in 2013. Considering that I have a good deal content/articles, are certain JA templates more suitable for this site than others? For instance, I really think the look / aesthetics of JA University and think its appearance would be a good fit for my job site (http://www.joomlart.com/demo/#joomla25-templates.joomlart.com/ja_university), is the University template not well suited for a site with a lot of content like mine, and content that is categorized by topic, like a newspaper site does and my choices limited to templates such as JA Lime, JA NEX and JA Ironis, (I already use JA Teline on a sister site, so I don’t want to use it on this one too)?

I’d be very grateful to have some insights on the suitableness of the mentioned templates for my site before I get started, so that I don’t end up going down the wrong path.

    Thanks.

Would the JA Mendozite template also work? I’m thinking that I would use the JA news module extensions to organize my site’s articles by topics (as opposed to the demo, which just shows individual articles that go to pages with only one article each) on the home page and the landing pages for each of the sections. Does that make sense?

Thanks for your help! I’ve only finished one site in Joomla so far, so I’m still a rookie and I’m not a dev, so my knowledge doesn’t go as deep as some of the folks here who can code PHP, etc. I’m looking to start working on the site this week.

After looking carefully at University, I have some SEO and usability concerns about the mouseover navigational elements and find the JA Mendozite would be a much better fit. I also meant to add that we’re going to need to add banner ads to the pages — a banner at the top of the pages and another ad on the right hand side. Is that as simple as adding a module to the JA Mendozite design? Can a banner ad fit on the top of this template or does this requirement mean that I am better off with a template specially designed for lots of articles in specific categories (like my site) and advertising on the page, such as the JA news templates such as Nex, Rave or Lime?

    Hi chicat,
<blockquote>I also meant to add that we’re going to need to add banner ads to the pages — a banner at the top of the pages</blockquote>
You could do that, there are tutorials and tips in this forum about this and with a quick search you can find them.
<blockquote>Can a banner ad fit on the top of this template or does this requirement mean that I am better off with a template</blockquote>
It depends on what you will display in these banner, if it is simple then it wil does not effect much on your site.

    regards.

Thanks, but you missed my earlier question,:

    1. “I’m thinking that I would use the JA news module extensions to organize my site’s articles by topics (as opposed to the demo, which just shows individual articles that go to pages with only one article each) on the home page and the landing pages for each of the sections. Does that make sense?”

    2. My other question is that I really would like to use a responsive template, but the University template used Javascript for some of the navigation. While spiders can now deal with that (they once couldn’t), it’s still unfavorable from an SEO perspective. So if I go with JA Mendozite is it likely to be updated to be a responsive template in the near future? Considering how important mobile and tablets are, I don’t want to neglect it in the design.

    3. One last question, if I take a responsive template and add a module that did not come with the template, does the template cease to be responsive? That is, does it lose it’s ability to be responsive when you start adding various modules that were not part of the original design and were not designed to be responsive?

Thanks in advance. I appreciate your helpfulness.

    Hi chicat,

    1. <blockquote>use the JA news module extensions to organize my site’s articles by topics</blockquote>
Could you explain in detail (screenshot) of what you wanna achieve? since as per our demo site, when you click on an article link, it directs you to details page of that article.

    2. This JA Mendozite template is not responsive by default and currently, we have no plan to update it for responsive layouts.
    3. Not only template the extensions too should support responsive layouts or the template will break.

    Hope this make senses.

First, thanks for the answers. I’ve been trying to figure this out for quite a while and you’ve know made things a lot clearer for me.
As far as my desire to organize content into categories, like a news or magazine site, it would be very much along the lines of what Teline IV does by article category on the home page (http://www.joomlart.com/demo/#joomla25-templates.joomlart.com/ja_teline_iv/) — in the demo, there are modules for Sport, Artist, Travel, Life & Style, etc. — and when you click on one of those categories, you are taken to a category home page: http://www.joomlart.com/demo/#joomla25-templates.joomlart.com/ja_teline_iv/. I’d like to be able to display content similarly on the home page and create similar category landing pages, if that is possible. Is that possible with JA Mendozite?

As far as no plans to update JA Mendozite for responsive layout, that is disappointing. I was hoping that JA would start doing this for their existing or at least most popular templates. As I have tested out JA Mendozite on a tablet and it was fine, but not on a smartphone, so I will need to explore alternatives for smartphones, as mobile is very important to my site’s audience.

    Hi chicat again,

JA Mendozite and JA Teline IV (and most other templates) are based on JAT3 Framework, the difference between them are the design of each and layout used, pls check out our wiki guide to know more about our JAT3 framework, if you want JA Mendozite displaying the same, you need to make some change in layout and install the same modules used in JA Teline IV template. From demo site, you can build a demo site to check how we configure with DEMO BUILDER tool.

Currently, we have limited number of people in the team who has already been working full time with upgrading J3.0 and monthly template. I understand about that and thank you for bringing up the idea of update this template for responsive layout. When enough people are interested (or agree) to wanting this, that is when we know it’s time to do since. Hope you understand us.

    Regards.
