I must be misunderstanding the concept of changing the style of the template. No matter what I do, I can’t seem to change it from the default template.

If anyone could point me to the proper resources, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi
You can change style to your template from backend editing home menu item and changing the template assigned to it from homepage to another one
