The reason I ask is because if the problem is not there in the other browser to begin with, will a change like this add too much space then causing other problems in other browsers. Why does the demo site not have this problem? Very confusing.

Make the changes then view in Opera, Firefox etc and see how it shows.
You DO have more than IE installed on your system for testing your sites in?
Other modern browsers are generally able to ignore some issues that sends IE into ‘quirks mode’ do a Google on IE & quirks mode for more info

February 17, 2009 at 6:22 am #291900No, I don’t have anything else installed on my computer. After 12 years of designing sites with Notepad in HTML, I gave up trying to build for everyone and dumped all of the extra browsers in favor of building for the majority… in the case of most of my projects… that is IE. Over 92% of my viewers use IE6 and IE7. I use IE7. I long ago gave up trying to be a “techie” and keep up with everything.
Netscape 3 used to be the bad guy… that was many years ago. About the time Firefox, Netscape 7, and all of these others came out, I threw in the towel for the backward compatible approach. As long as keep scripting on my HTML sites fairly simple, compatibilty is not an issue.
I tried moving to Mambo 4 years ago, but after the first hack of my site, I threw that out as well. Now I am thinking of giving Joomla a shot, but really worried about some of the many compatibility issues I am seeing.
I know somewhere out there on the internet there was a website that gave you some sort of snapshot or something of what your website looks like in all the other browsers, but I don’t remember where that was at. A quick Google search has turned up nothing.
You wouldn’t happen to know of it would you?

February 17, 2009 at 6:25 am #291901BTW, when I asked that question I should have probably added that I was wondering about one of those “if” statements for adding the padding to IE7 only rather than making it available for all browsers. Not a php guru so I don’t know if that is possible, but seems like it should be.

My google search on “view web sites in all major browsers online” led me to http://browsershots.org/ via this post
Test Your Website On All Major Browsers « WP Remix Support ForumThen I used Firefox to search not IE 😀 I feel sorry for you having to hand code in notepad for twelve years while there were wysiwyg editors and even homesite to use for coding, what were you saying about seniors who don’t like change? February 17, 2009 at 6:44 am #291911Hi there hdanh00,
This is the improved version. Very nicely done. As far as I can remember, the old site was a bit darker. I like it better like this. Easier to read, but still has that nice feeling and look that really fits well with the site.
Under the top module it says, Back < 1 > Next. I guess you are planning on adding more pictures soon. Otherwise it is a bit unneccesary and distracts from the picture.
The only thing that I found that I would think you would want to change is under Notices:
Hosting: Dreamhost
Content Management System: Joomla!
Current Template: JA Uvite by http://www.joomlart.com
Stock Image Sources: http://www.sxc.hu & http://www.morguefile.com
The template has changed, obviously, and you have made great use of it.

February 17, 2009 at 7:01 am #291916hdanh00;112549I usually don’t change my site design at the drop of a hat but I really like the JA Cooper theme and just had to have it.
I only changed a few things to get it working and to make fiction-reading on the site a bit less hard on the eyes for visitors to the site. It’s a Science Fiction/Fantasy writer’s site.
Link: http://www.tonyamoore.comAs always, suggestions for improvement appreciated. 🙂
Hi hdanh
I like it overall, it looks functional and well suited to the theme generally, I’m not a fan of the pink but as the subject writer is female I guess it’s her choice?
As a sci fi nut, I’m surprised you have left the luxury wallpaper at the top, I’d have thought given the sci fi nature and ref to space etc a more classic space/stars/spaceships? kind of wallpaper would be suited?
Again if the client loves it so be it
Keep up the great work

It wasn’t so much that I didn’t like change, I was just a perfectionist and didn’t like the editors of the day… Front Page and such. Now I am just tired. Even with Dreamweaver I find myself rewriting everything anyway to get EXACTLY what I want. That is one of the problems I am finding with Joomla… temmplates are a bit restricting. No they are VERY restricting.
Thanks for the search… I didn’t use that many words… probably why I didn’t come up with anything.

February 17, 2009 at 7:23 am #291925Finally got done with my 2nd install of the Cooper template. I wanted to mention this here because it has to do with the padding issue and the content slider problem earlier in this thread.
First I installed just the template and had the same issues. Then I decided to try the Quickstart install and absolutely no problems, everything is perfect just like the demo even after adding some of my own content to test it out. There is a difference between installing just the template and using the Quickstart when it comes to some of the issues with the template and IE.
Just wish I could tell you why. It would be nice to know exactly what is different especially if you have a finished site and simply want to change the look. I am lucky, still in the planning stages so I could use the Quickstart install, but for others, it could be a problem I guess.

You raise an interesting point, I mainly develop offline and add all my content and test before uploading to a live host so I never really come across too many probs. The fact that I always use the quickstart method and mostly fill in the blanks approach may account for less probs. When I have to turn on and off modules positions etc some stuff does come up but not a lot.
Maybe this is an indication of the thought and planning (testing) Ja does prior to most demos going up ( as a qs is the demo site in toto)?
Cheers ShannonN

February 17, 2009 at 1:58 pm #292057@jwellman – I tried the change you suggested but on my end, it doesn’t seem to be having any effect.
Totally frustrating not being able to get something to look the way it does in the demo. 🙁@ Sunrise = yeah, I left those options because I do plan to add a couple more items to the slideshow module.
– Thanks for the reminder about the FAQ listing – it’d probably be months before that even crossed my mind.
@ ShannonN – to be honest if I could find something like that – that wasn’t to overpowering, I might go with it. Then again, the abstract patterns work better – because I do write and post mixed genres there. As for the pink… you kinda hit the nail on the head: for once in my life, I wanted to go with something… girly.
