    Forgive me if this obvious, but I am brand new to Joomla (v1.5) and these templates. I can’t seem to find where or how to make it such that the front page template looks one way and then that all the other pages have another look – basically mimicking Rutile’s look for the home page and the Typography.

    A template is going to follow it’s base design. You can make changes say to how your articles load… single file, with pictures, descriptions et cetera. However if you talking about customization of each different page I don’t know of anyway to do that other then changing the css yourself.
