I want to change the background colors under the words home, search, forum, faq, etc.

They don’t appear to be images. Are they part of the css? Is so where can I make the change?

Looking in the Sargas template folder you will see some menu folders. In each folder, there’s a css file. You could modify the style in appropriate menu css file to change the look and feel of the menu.
