February 11, 2009 at 9:48 pm #138037Joomla vs HTML website….
I am transfering a very large and heavily visited HTML site to Joomla, this site has been on the internet for 10 years. I am doing this because updating the hundreds of pages and menus in this site are becoming too much of a pain. It has become a full time job!
About 4 years ago, I transfered the site to Mambo. Within 2 months the site was hacked and completely disabled. I put my HTML site back up.
I am having a lot of second thoughts about trying this again after viewing these forums for the last week. Over and over I see issues with IE, small issues causing big problems, sites not viewing properly or not at all etc. The majority of my viewers are either school age K thru college or the senior crowd. Over 92% are using IE6 and 7. Some are using back to Netscape 3 (Yes… it still exists out there)… those are usually accessing from grade school computers that haven’t been updated anytime this century!
Then there are the hacking issues with all of the database driven elements. If I understand correctly, with this type of site, it is easy for a hacker to just install a code into your site that will completely disable or destroy the site, a problem that is not usually found with a pure HTML site. I know there have been regular security updates, but things still slip through or new ways of hacking are found… or new security updates would not be needed.
So, with all of this in mind, I am hoping to get some feedback from people who have large, heavily visited, Joomla sites for over a year as to what kind of experiences they have had with some of these issues and how it affects their viewership.
Thanks for any insight you can give.

February 11, 2009 at 10:58 pm #290750Hi imsleepy,
It looks like you are mostly worried about site hacks using Joomla, I can tell you I have been using Joomla for over 4 years and the only time I ever had a site hacked was back when Joomla announced a major security hole (1.1.5 I believe). The sites that got hacked were ones that I threw up but did not update or monitor and because I didn’t pay any attetion to them, they slipped throught the cracks and some hacker defaced them.
All my other sites have NEVER been hacked, (although I have seen attempts in the logs) but I do regular upgrades of ALL Joomla core code as well as keep on top of ALL 3rd party components and modules.
I know this sounds like a lot of work, but it’s not.If you stay on top of updates you should not have any problems.
Good luck.

February 11, 2009 at 11:05 pm #290752Thanks for your input. I am also worried about IE compatibility issues also. Do you have any experience or feedback from your visitors regarding these issues?

February 12, 2009 at 2:11 am #290777compatibility issues exists even in pure HTML pages. it really depends on how ‘advanced’ the code is, whether css is used, and other factors.
however, compatibility issues are usually cosmetic and does not really affect the functionality of the website. or at least thats my experience so far

Although most of the Ja templates are IE 6 (I assume that’s what you’re asking about) compatable, you may occasionally run into a formatting bug etc. Problems usually arrise when you edit the css or publish a module to the wrong position.
If you like a certain JA template I suggest using the quick start package as what you will get after install is what you see in the demo. So no messing with css or layout.
Out of the box most Ja templates work just fine in all browsers, & yes I’ve installed and modified the templates for about 30 Joomla sites.;)
