Hi I am using JA Social II and want to change the default page color from grey to white. Sorry for the newbie question here but how do I do this in a way that future template updates will not overwrite it please?

You can Create Your own Theme from Theme Magic in template options .
Here is doc for theme magic . Or u can create custom.css in JA Social II template /css folder .
css/custom.css and add below code to change background color

background-color: #fff!important;
}
