June 21, 2008 at 4:18 am #129949I applied the page break to my articles but the whole content still shows up on the front page JA NEWS module. You can even see the red line with it.

June 21, 2008 at 9:05 am #255147HiHi redlight_traitor;,
By the way, your article will read much more easily if instead of using hyphen you used the ordered listing to present the rules.
For example, instead of like this:
WHEN TRAINING:
– Stay calm and punch lighter on the bag so you can last more rounds and keep your form together and punches sharp. This will allow you to get in more minutes of quality bagwork. You want to have energy to hit the bag with correct form and keep your punches snappy, instead of spending most of your bagwork panting and huffing to show that you have “heart”. Don’t waste energy showing off on the bag – nobody cares.
– Don’t workout till fatigue. Get tired, break a sweat, and just push yourself a little more each day. If you go until failure everyday of the week without a clear reward, you’ll probably overtrain and quit boxing very soon.
– Drink lots of water. One cup every hour minimum!
– Make friends in the gym, be humble, and ask people for boxing tips. When another boxer beats you, ask him how he did it; you may be surprised at how helpful they will be at showing you your own weaknesses.WHEN TRAINING:

or better still

Note the line break after the first main statement of each guideline.
Also, spacing in between long instructions makes the instructions less crowded, and easier to read.

June 21, 2008 at 9:27 am #255148Hi Cornelio,
First off. Thank you very much. I don’t quite understand my problem. When I first built the site, everything worked perfectly. The “max characters” parameter was set to “0” and all the READ MORE breaks that I put in my articles worked just fine and also worked fine in the categories. What do I have to do to bring back the functionality?
Even now as I set a “max characters” to “100”, I am still having all sorts of weird spacing problems. I’ll be working on this right now so things might be changing. Thanks again for the layout advice.

June 21, 2008 at 10:02 am #255153Instead of use the Pagebreak, why not use the Read more.. button? You have that one next to the Pagebreak button. In Joomla 1.5 they have dropped the intro text and body text, and you should use the read more button to split between intro text and main text. Btw have you tried to use the pagebreak after you have inserted read more? SOmething like this:
SOmething like this:
some text
some text
some text
-read more-
more text
more text
more text
-pagebreak-I know some have had problems with adding pagebreak and it ends up at the top of the article.

June 21, 2008 at 10:59 am #255156I never used the pagebreak. I’ve always used the “Read More” button. For some reason, everything was working fine before… now it seems like the “Read More” dotted line has no effect.
http://www.expertboxing.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=46:boxing-gloves-buyers-review&catid=55:boxing-gloves&Itemid=79
This link shows perfectly in the front page and also on it’s own link. I created this before.http://www.expertboxing.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=57:16-basic-boxing-tips&catid=36:training&Itemid=55
This one doesn’t show properly on the front page and doesn’t show properly on its own link either. The “Read More” line break shows up as just an orange line break. The funny thing is, even if I copy the content item from the 1st link and publish it, it will still show the dotted line and the whole article will show on the front page.

<LI>When you punch, turn your whole body into the punch. If your feet are slow, (most people have slow feet) you will find that punching a little slower actually hits harder than punching faster. <LI>Breathe out when you punch and always look at your target when you punch. Don’t hold your breath and don’t look at the ground. Learn to keep your eyes open doing the heat of the battle!</LI>

<LI>Don’t energy running around the ring, just take one step and pivot out of the way if your opponent is overly aggressive. Think of yourself as a matador pivoting out of the way as the bull misses. Don’t forget to hit him back.</LI>
<LI>Don’t lean back and don’t take your eyes off your opponent when you’re taking punches (this is especially hard for most beginners). Establish your ground and defend it with hard counters. Pivot so that you don’t get countered.</LI>

A complete guide for those who don’t know what type of punching gloves and boxing gloves to buy. You will learn the different between all the different types of gloves, their uses, and where to buy. <BR>
<HR id=system-readmore>
Punching Gloves come in the ever-confusing variety. What’s even more confusing is that the manufacturer claims that each product they offer is the best choice. I’ll help you decipher between the names and the claims.<BR><BR><BR>
<H2>Why Use Gloves?</H2>Contrary to what other fighting forms like karate or kungfu will recommend, punching will wreck your hands over time EVEN if you are careful. Incorrect punching form as well as unprotected hands will lead to arthritis, weakened joints, weakened muscles, and decreased functionality of the hands over time. It’s scary but it does happen. To ensure that your hands will be protected and functioning well for the rest of your life, it’s important that you always protect them. Just like you wear headgear to protect your head, you must wear punching gloves to protect your hand. Some punch gloves will even go a step further by providing extra cushion to protect your opponents from taking too much damage.<BR><BR>A good pair of boxing gloves will be comfortable and fit your hand around the wrist and the fingers. You shouldn’t feel like the glove is tiring out your hand or forcing it to shape in a way that feels awkward. High quality gloves will be able to take a punch time and time again without losing it’s cushioning qualities. Certain materials used to make the glove will determine how long it lasts before it tears apart or flattens up. It’s important to note that while some cheap gloves may feel just as comfortable as expensive gloves or seem to cushion the impact even better, they certainly will not stay that way over time.<BR><BR><BR>
<H2>Real Training Brands VS Toy Brands</H2>Not all punching gloves are made with the mentality of real boxing training in mind. As with anything life, not all are made equal. The worst brands are the ones offered at large sporting chains like Big 5 Sports, Sports Chalet, and Sports Authority. The absolute worst punching gloves you could buy are the Everlast ones that look like the classic boxing gloves. Don’t EVER buy those – you will probably break your hands within a week if you do.<BR><BR><BR><BR><BR>
<H2>Expensive VS Cheap Pricing</H2>Just because you paid more for your punching gloves does not make them better. However, the rule of you get what you pay for still remains. A $25 set of punching gloves will probably not be as good as a $60 pair of gloves from the same store. Use common sense and expect to pay at least $40 online or $55 if buying from a store.<BR><BR><BR><BR><BR>
<H2>Different Glove Types</H2><STRONG>Bag Gloves</STRONG> – Most of these look small, lean, and trim. The more expensive ones look like regular boxing gloves. In my opinion, ignore them, they are a waste of time and money. They are to protect your knuckles while you deliver hard punches to the punching bag and accustomed your knuckles to harder impact. Another thing to note is that some bag gloves are really stiff and don’t form well to a curved fist.<BR><BR><STRONG>Training Gloves</STRONG> – These are all-purpose gloves. Some of them are not thick enough for sparring.<BR><BR><STRONG>Sparring Gloves</STRONG> – These are general use gloves. I highly recommend everyone to buy a pair of these before anything. They are made with extra cushion to protect your hand as well as cushion the blows to your opponent. You can use these gloves for all-purpose boxing. It’s important to note that sparring gloves should be at least 14-16 ounces especially if you weigh anything over 130 pounds.<BR><BR><STRONG>Pro or Fight Gloves</STRONG> – Fight gloves are smaller and more compact to deliver more damage to your opponent. They are not recommended for anything other than real competition.<BR><BR><STRONG>Aerobic or Cardio Gloves</STRONG> – These gloves are usually made obvious by their really low pricing. Avoid them! They have the least amount of padding and will fall apart faster than anything.<BR><BR><BR>
<H2>Color</H2>Does the color of your boxing gloves matter? YES! Although red is the classic color, it is less visible to the human eye than other colors in the spectrum. If you’re sparring against someone, it’s preferred that they wear gloves of a color that you can see. Don’t forget that wearing light colored gloves can also help your trainer catch your punches better. I’ve trained at night a lot so I love to buy blue, green, and white colored gloves. I still have a pair of red ones just because red is the classic boxing color. Another knock on red gloves is that sometimes you can’t see the build up of blood stains on the gloves. I know this is a bit morbid but I’d like to know if a pair of gloves have been bled on.<BR><BR><BR>
<H2>Lace-Up VS Hook & Loop</H2>Lace-up gloves offer more comfort if you like your glove to fit snug around your wrist. For some fighters, it’s just a habit to have lace-up gloves. Hook & Loop gloves are made to be convenient and can be just as supportive as the lace-up while having the convenience of being hook & loop. Most people will prefer the hook & loop gloves because they can put them on themselves without much help. The bad parts about hook & loop in my opinion are that the elastic velcro hooks can tear into your cotto hand wraps and shred them. It’s not a big deal but it’s happened to me before and really annoyed the hell out of me. Lace-up gloves are actually not that hard to deal with. They might be considered even more convenient than hook & loop gloves if you have skinny wrists – since all you have to do is tie the laces just once and then slip your hands in and out every time before use.<BR><BR>Another great thing about lace-up gloves is that it allows you to walk around the gym and ask people to tie your gloves. It makes a great icebreaker for you to walk around and meet the pros, trainers, and other fighters in your gym.<BR><BR><BR>
<H2>My Thoughts on Different Glove Brands</H2><STRONG>Title </STRONG>- I love Title boxing gear. Their brand is quality without charging too much. It also happens that I see their gloves in boxing gyms all the time. Even their classic training gloves will take years of abuse.<BR><BR><STRONG>Everlast </STRONG>- One of the most popular names synonymous with the sport of boxing. Much of their gear is unfortunately a bunch of hype. I don’t know why this company has a toy division but many of their products are over-priced and crappy. Their gear becomes higher quality only when you buy the higher-end pro-grade stuff. You basically don’t see any real boxing gloves from Everlast until you pay about $60 or more. Everything from $60 and down feels too stiff, too much like a toy, or just not anatomically comfortable for the hand. Not surprisingly, I see the name Everlast more inside little kid’s toy closets than I do in real boxing gyms.<BR><BR><STRONG>Grant </STRONG>- Awesome gloves with protection all over. They’re a bit heavy in my opinion sometimes which kinda slows down my punches. Highly recommended for fighters over 175 pounds though.<BR><BR><STRONG>Century </STRONG>- CRAP. Absolute crap. Unfortunately, many people see this cheap brand sold everywhere like at Big 5 sports and Sports Chalet and actually believe it’s a real boxing brand – IT ISN’T! Stay away!<BR><BR><STRONG>TKO </STRONG>- Imitation pro gloves. Their gloves might look thick and feel good at first but they’ll quickly break down and stiffen which gives you less protection over time. Avoid these wannabe-pro gloves like the plague!<BR><BR><STRONG>Reyes </STRONG>- believe the hype. These gloves are made to be more compact at the fist to aid the puncher. It’s important to note that these gloves are made for FIGHTING, definitely not TRAINING. The gloves punch harder because they have less protective cushion so it’s important to protect your hands as much as possible in training. They are also very high quality and last forever if you can get the authentic mexican-made ones. There are hidden links on the internet.<BR><BR><STRONG>Rivals </STRONG>- Very nice, expensive stuff that also looks cool. In my opinion, you can find equally good gloves for a bit less. It’s up to you if you like their cool glove styling.<BR><BR><STRONG>Ringside </STRONG>- Just like Rivals, it’s very nice and super high quality but expensive. You can certainly find another punching glove just the same but for less money.<BR><BR><STRONG>PRO </STRONG>- This is a company that is located in Southern California in the LA area. Their punching gloves are crap. I’ve tried even their professional ones before and they go flat within months of heavy use. Avoid them no matter how much their salesperson discounts the price.<BR><BR><BR><BR>
<H2>Purchasing Recommendations</H2>The best way to buy punching gloves, or anything in life, is to go to a store that carries the product and try them out in person. Get a feel for the gear and use your own judgment for “quality” and “feel”. Don’t let the salesperson talk you into buying their own generic store-brand boxing products.<BR><BR>After you’ve tried out a feel brands and decide which ones you want, go online and look for prices online – they will most likely be MUCH MUCH cheaper over the internet. OPTIONAL – you can call back the store and let them know you’ve found a better price online but you’d be willing to buy in person if they can match the price.<BR><BR>For starters, <A href=”http://www.titleboxing.com/” target=_blank mce_href=”http://www.titleboxing.com”>www.titleboxing.com</A> is a great place to start.

Hi redlight_traitor;
This might be the culprit:
The “max characters” parameter was set to “0”
when it is set at zero, it indicates that everything would be included. OK, I did not realize that in Joomla 1.5, it is different. My bad.
I did apply as Menalto stated above in one of my Joomla 1.5 installations. Here are my findigs
If the “max characters” parameter was set to “0”
- And, I do not apply any "Read More" and just use a "Page Break",
- If I place a "Read More" and then use a "Page Break"[/B] way down a long text,
--the article that appears in the Home Page will not show any text -- if this article appears in the Home Page.
--And, all sorts of problems occur in the Section or Category page, or the full article itself.-- the article that appears in the Home Page will show the text up to the "Read More"
-- the article that appears in Section page will show the text up to the "Read More", as well.
--the full article will show the text way up to the page break, and a Next will show up at the bottom
-- clicking next will show the text after the "Page Break"If the “max characters” parameter was set to a defined number (not “0”), e.g., 150
The layout errors (dificulties), without the “Read More and only a “Page Break” was used, is the same as in the previous scenario, so it is not presented again here. Instead, the focus would be on the effect of limiting the maximum characters shown in the Home Page, Section Page, Category Page and the Full Article.
If I place a "Read More" first and then use a "Page Break"[/B] way down a long text,- the article that appears in the Home Page will show only so much text and will break when the maximum characters is reached.
- the article that appears in the Section and the Category pages will show text up to the "Read More"
- the full article will show the text way up to the page break, and a Next will show up at the bottom
- clicking next will show the text after the "Page Break"
-- this is a layout strategy to make the Section spacing almost the same in the Home Page.
-- note this significant difference between the rules observed in the Home Page vs the Section and the Category pages.
Based from the above findings, it is mandatory to have a “Read More” before using a “Page Break” — as Menalto suggested.

Hi redlight_traitor,
I cannot reproduce your error exactly, if I follow the rules outlined by Menalto. So, what I did was “Copy” your content and pasted it directly into my site in one of the Sport Page..
The “Read More” from the article I copied in your site does not work. So, I removed and replaced that with a new “Read More”. And it worked in the Home Page. However, when I went to the Sport Page, it messed up the layout completely. I cannot figure out what was going on.
What I did was to paste it in an ordinary editor (Page Spinner) that will not copy the html mark ups. Then, I pasted this in the site again. Added dummy photo, and reformatted it again using the default Editor.
The new one worked.
http://world-odyssey.org/jte15x10/index.php/sport
One other thing I found. When I placed the Read More in between the ordered listings, the text does not show up.
It looks I have to study this more myself.

June 21, 2008 at 5:41 pm #255192Hi Cornelio,
A few details. I never meant to use page break, I wanted to use “READ MORE” but I just mis-named the thread. As for the max characters being set to “0”, it was always set there and always worked fine but then started acting up starting a couple days ago.
I will read your details and see what I can find. THANKS!

Hi redlight_traitor,
Why not place max char=150 or something? Also, not middle of article but close what would be required to appear in Home Page.
From my findings, the “ordered list” might have an impact on the layout.
I was able to replicate what would happen based on the instructions of Menalto. However, in an attempt to understand your actual situation, I copied your actual “problematic” article, and pasted it directly into a “new file” and placed in a category and section. As it turned out, that specific file that I copied from your site — completely messed up my page layout – even worse than your site.
The only way it would work is if I stripped the full article of any scripting html mark ups. When I pasted it nito a new page (without the “historical markups”) the stripped version worked — did not destroy the layout of my page.
This may be one of those problems that are difficult to diagnose without getting into the Admin page itself. I do not feel qualified to do that though.
Frankly, considering all the problems of Joomla1.5x that people reported here, and from my own use of the f Joomla1.5x, I myself do not use it. I am using the “Joomla1.0x-JA Teline II” right now, and do not have any of the problems that people using Joomla1.5x-JA Teline II. More important, there are too many extensions that I use right now that are not yet Joomla 1.5x native.
I do not know when Joomla 1.5x will really be truly stable. It took several years for Joomla 1.0x to become stable. When the day come that Joomla 1.5x, there are extension tools now that will allow easy tansfer of contents from Joomla1.0x to Joomla 1.5x.
That is my strategy right now, and I am sticking to it.
