Is there anyway to remove the gray mascol – left column on specific pages, and leave it on others?
not just the modules but the actual gray graphic.. is there a way for that to open to whitespace?

If you unpublish all modules in left/right position you should get rid of it, or do you just wanna get rid of the graphics behind them? The way i understand your question you want to get rid of the column on some pages and you can do that by unpublish modules in thoose positions on the specific pages, i belive its left/right modules and user5 if i am correct
You can go to your site and add this at the end of your site url: ?tp=1
Then you will see all module positions and which one to turn off.
