July 27, 2008 at 4:26 pm #262570The PDF feature does work on the JA Demo of the Teline II site.
This clearly shows that someone at JA got this to work properly.
This really draws the attention the need for JA to supply a change log for each and every template. I want to use this template for a site, and it was the reason I joined JA. But, all the problems I am reading here have me in fear of all the headaches. I can not even find the last date and version number of the template.

Hi artaddicted. It may kind of ‘work’ on the demo site, but not to an acceptable level. Exactly the same problems as I have with my site.
Here’s how the article looks in the browser on the demo site:
And here’s how it looks in the generated PDF file:
Same problem. Images resized and spacing all over?

July 28, 2008 at 5:59 am #262648Hi Questbg
There was a response at the Joomla forum. It reads
“Hi. The PDF button doesn’t work correctly. This is a known bug in Joomla! 1.5. I don’t know the schedule for when it will be fixed. But I agree it’s a pain. In the meantime, you can disable the PDF button using the Article Manager / Global Parameters. Hope this helps. Mark”
So it looks like we have to disable the pdf icon…unless of course JA comes to the rescue ..
Quite frustrating with all these problems

July 28, 2008 at 6:08 am #262650Thanks for that 2Patrick.
I already disabled the PDF icon for all articles this morning. Seems the safest thing to do until a bug-fix can be found!!
Let’s hope they don’t take too long!! 😉

July 28, 2008 at 6:35 am #262655You at least got the images appearing for the demo content.( although not correctly displayed )
My images dont even appear in the pdf output ( using demo in Joomla 1.015 ) !
Anyway, luckily I came to know about it now – way before my site goes life ! Thanks for your persistence to draw attention to your post!

July 28, 2008 at 10:12 pm #262756hello questbg and others,
It seems that the pdf generation is a pretty crappy thing within Joomla nothing to do with JA.
I found this plugin http://www.joomlatwork.com/products/components/prettypdf-a-pdf-generator-for-joomla.html but it is a buy component and only for J1.0.It also seems that you might need to install separate font packages for the pdf generator but not sure about this.
So lets not blame JA for this!

July 29, 2008 at 3:13 pm #262905questbg,
Same here on 1.5.3 It seems that I was not to smart jumping onto the new stuff. Should probably have stayed on the J1.0 old vagon.
Lets see if this extension comes out in a 1.5 ver. I dont mind paying for somthing that works. Even programmers has to eat some times!Bosse

July 30, 2008 at 2:48 am #262972Hi Questbg
Sure…give me about 6 to 8 weeks …I am glad I stayed with Joomla 1.0
On the other hand , adding components can also affect performance
Let me revert asap

Hi Chris,
I did not jump into this topic when I first read it because it might confuse you, and you might not like what I would suggest, just like you jumped on me when I tried to provide alternatives in another thread. 🙂
I was about to suggest early on that iJoomla suggested in one of its Tips that it is not good to Turn on the pdf generator.
Reason: When a pdf generated page is created of pages like Joomla, it does not “copy” backgrounds, so that the logo of the site (which is actually just a background) is not included. The pdf copy, without the page logo, therefore does not create much promotion for your site, except for the gray copyright notice at the bottom.
Also, unlike a true pdf generator — for true copy of documents in the standard page — pdf generated pages from online materials are downright ugly in their format because it is truncated at the wrong places, and format depends on the user computer settings.
I am not sure if these are the reasons why online papers like New York Times, BBC, etc. do not provide the pdf option for download (although you can still do it using Safari). They much prefer either “email this” or “print”, the latter usually is pre-formatted to include not only the company logo in all pages, but also ads and other promos.
Of course, allowing “printed” material or “email to a friend” makes it much easier to be copied electronically.
So, there are pros and cons for each alternative.
Cornelio

<em>@cgc0202 70477 wrote:</em><blockquote>

</blockquote>Interesting you should post this. For the last two days I’ve been investigating other ‘online magazines’ and couldn’t hardly find any that allowed PDF save of articles.
As you say, one main reason for this is people can just ‘take’ the article and then e-mail it to friends, etc., which doesn’t do a lot of good for the site (even more so if the logo is missing!).
At least the ‘print’ and ‘e-mail’ option results in more ‘clicks’ on the site. Plus, e-mail actually only sends the link of the article, not the actual article, which could then mean new visitors to the site and yet more clicks!
In retrospect, we may actually decide to leave the PDF option altogether!
However, I’d still be interested in 2Patrick’s investigations into the PDF generator extension.
Cheers
