February 12, 2009 at 7:55 pm #138074OK before everyone yells at me for asking this question… I have searched the forums but really haven’t found a lot that covers what I am asking so please bear with me on this.
PDF works but doesn’t both on my site and in the Joomlart Demos. I am using Vista and IE7. It appears that the phishing filter may be the culprit.
When I add my site to list of trusted sites, PDF then opens in a completely new window, address bar and all… and it works but not what I want. When I don’t have my site in trusted sites, it shows the PDF is downloading, then it shows it’s done, but blank screen. In the meantime, phishing filter is working very hard.
Logically I would add my site to the trusted sites and move on. However, doing this adds another problem of EVERY page opening in a new window. Don’t want that either.
Then there are my visitors. Well over half daily are new visitors so the chances they are adding the site to trusted site are slim to none.
Really, I don’t NEED PDF function, print works fine. However, I PREFER PDF over printing function.
I am not 100% certain that phishing filter is the problem.
I am not really looking for an answer to this problem since after viewing the forum this seems to be an ongoing issue that I am guessing is strictly browser related. What I am looking for is some input and suggestions on what I might be able to do to fix this. 92% of my viewers are using IE 6 and 7 so if that is definately the problem, I will disable the PDF function. As I said, I can’t use the PDF function on the Joomlart demos either. I am guessing if this was some sort of scripting problem they would have addressed it long ago.
Thanks for any suggestions you might have or any insight into what is causing this issue.

I would first try to disable the phishing filter on your computer and see if that solves it. Then you might know better where to look.
Most of the time problems with pdf are local computer issues, like a missing pdf plugin in your browser. Reinstalling acrobat reader should solve that problem.

I am not using Acrobat Reader. I am using Acrobat Professional 7.0. Could that be the cause? I have never encountered problems other than with Mambo and Joomla sites. Years ago when I had Mambo I never could use the PDF either.
I take it you have no problem viewing the PDF on the demos? If it is the case that it is an issue with my computer rather than a Joomla issue then I will breate a sigh of relief and deal with the hopefully few emails I get telling me it is not working properly.
didima… Do you know if there are any possible adverse affect by enabling Gzip Compression. I am not familiar with this function. Can you provide some information as to what Gzip Compression actually does?
Thanks!

Acrobat writer uses the same web plugin to open pdf’s within a browser.
On my side the pdf’s work without problems on the JA demo’s
Regarding Gzip compression i would recommend to always enable it as it compresses your site wich makes it faster to load for users as they have less kb/s to download.

Gzip Compression is an important feature to reduce bandwidth and faster page loads for your visitors. Most of the web servers support Gzip Compression, and in most case, you can shrink yours site’s pages by 70% to 90%. Gzip Compression is supported by most of the web server.
Joomla uses PHP to create the HTML pages that make up your website. Most of people tends to use it to build some features-rich web site, which results in the increase of the page size. Enabling Gzip Compression will significantly improve the performance of your Joomla Site.
In order to enable Gzip compression, you can go to Global Configuration -> Server tab. Set GZIP Page Compression to Yes. Then all done.
well just found this for you because more clear and better

Thank you for this. One more question…
Since Gzip Compression “shrinks” my sites pages, does it affect the quality of graphics, videos etc?

Do you find that the majority of your viewers are able to view PDF? Still thinking about turning that option off.

Turned off the phishing filter… you were correct… not the problem. Still no PDF on my site or demos. Guess it must be an issue with my plugins. To be honest, I haven’t updated my version in over a year. But like I said, never have had any luck with PDFs in Mambo or Joomla using any one of the 6 computers I have used over the years.
Just tried my desktop and my son’s laptop as well. No luck with those either. My desktop has the same installation of Acrobat that my laptop has and is running Windows XP not Vista. My son’s laptop is running Vista and Firefox. He has Acrobat Reader 8.0 installed. My daughter just tried from work. She is running XP and IE 6 with Acrobat Reader 7.0. No luck either.
Interestingly, on my son’s hand held Sony PSP I think it’s called, he can’t load the entire site… too big, but he can open the PDFs. Similarily my neighbor came over with her ITouch thing and she also can view the PDFs. Seems the hand held devices can view them. Very strange.
Any thoughts?
