Site was fine last night, now this morning, when any of the tabs are clicked, a K2 php.index comes up in place of the page that’s supposed to be there.
I troubleshooted (is that a word??) and found that it’s the SEO setting in Global Config. I switched it to YES last night in order to make the site searchable on search engines. It forces the site into an index format.
Is this a bug? Obviously I want the site to be searchable, otherwise why have one?
    Please help.

    Hi,
<blockquote>Site was fine last night, now this morning, when any of the tabs are clicked, a K2 php.index comes up in place of the page that’s supposed to be there.</blockquote>
This problem happens when you turn SEO on? If yes notice that when you turn on SEO global, please make .htaccess file and turn on mod_rewrite on apache config.
    Hope that help

Thanks Phan Gam, I’ll try this today. I seem to recall that I needed to have mod_rewrite on apache conifg off for some other reason. I’ll let you know how it works. Thanks for the quick reply! :p

Without mod_rewrite enabled in Apache you cannot use SEO in the way you are using it.

Cannot see why you would need that disabled in Apache or are you confusing it with the settings in the Joomla back end?

Hi Phill! Probably am confusing it—am very confused about everything at the moment ; )
I’ll check it all this afternoon and hopefully won’t mess anything up!
Want to insert a horizontal logo between the top nav tabs and the slideshow. How can I do that?
    Thanks for all your help!

Ok, I’ve had a look and no, your seo is not working. Have you got the default .htaccess file in your root folder or have you got one called htaccess.txt?

Looking at your site you seem to have a lot of problems.

Firstly you are running a couple of Joomla versions behind so you will need to upgrade the Joomla install. They have had to fix a few security holes since your site was installed hence the number of updates in a short time. Upgrading is a simple job just involving you downloading the patch from the Joomla websit, unzipping it and uploading the files to yur site replacing the existing ones.

Next you have menu issues. You will neet to spend some time re-organizing your menu system so you do not have so many first level items. The mega menu is ideal for this but you will have to think carefully how you organize it.

Next you have asked me about your logo. As before, I created a new module position for that but your logo didn’t really fit. You need to get your designers head on here and pick a logo that will look good.

You are also having problems inserting widgets into your module positions but you have another thread for that.

There are also numerous other small issues ith your design that could do with some work put in.

To fix all this would be quite time consuming, some things are simple but others really will need some work. It is a steep learning curve you are on here and I think you need to go back to the basics and design your page layout and menu first before you get tied up in all the other bits. Work out a logo that will fit, work out your menu structure so you only have a few first level options. The technical stuff such as inserting widgets is easy but the design really is something you need to spend time on or pay someone to assist.

    Susan,

Your site has several major issues (some easily correctable) that need fixing immediately.
So may I suggest a slightly different strategy.
We need to forego working on the SEO until we can get your site operational.

If you are concerned about whether search engines can find your site…worry no more.
Google LISTINGBOOK JOOMLA – and you’ll find YOUR site listed 7th already!
So lets not worry about whether they can find you, lets worry on making it look the best now that it IS being found!

Two problems right off the bat:
In your CONTENT you have copied and pasted from a WORD Document. This is a major no-no in Joomla as the Microsoft code (MsoNormal) really screws with Joomla’s CSS. You need to go into the Article you’ve created containing your front page content at the least and re-paste it as clean text or use a WYSIWYG editor that has a “Copy from Word” function to it.

Secondly. In the LEFT position on the front page, it appears you tried to paste an iFrame of a MortgagenewsDaily.com widget. Joomla does not accept iFrame code directly pasted as you have done.

So let’s disable the Widget temporarily and clean up the content…getting rid of the MsoNormal crud…and then we can move forward.

    Have fun!
    John.

    Hi John,

Thank you and Phill both for your replies.

Yes, I realized a few weeks ago that copying and pasting from Word was a no-no, but I thought it was just for coding. It’s the only way I could find to make the text look the way I wanted as there are no options for this that I could see in the template. How can I avoid having pages of ugly white type? I don’t use many photos or graphics and there is a lot of content. Do you think this is why my SEO isn’t working??

I tried to go to download a Joomla update but couldn’t see anything that resembled that description, just a lot of template-specific looking things. I also don’t know how to install an update.

I hate to keep posting questions, but I’ve been stumbling through this process on my own, mickey-mousing things together as best I could by trial and error, just trying to get a site up. Googling “Listingbook Joomla” won’t bring me customers, when people Google “dc real estate” or anything similar, which is what will bring me business, I’m not even in the top 200. It is disheartening to work so hard for months without much direction (Phill actually helped me a lot with some crucial things), only to be told afterward that it’s all wrong. In any case, without you on the boards, we newbies would be lost forever. So thanks again for answering my post.

I guess my questions at this point are:

    1. Where is the update I need (what’s it called?) and how do I install it?
    2. How can I edit type if not in Word
    3. How do I get the widgets that can’t be inserted directly to work?

Appreciate the help and fast replies from both of you today : )

The point I was trying to make is that Google has already found your site.
Turning on SEO will do little more, right now, than make your URL’s pretty.

We need to get the content fixed before we worry about anything else, but yes, the “Word Crud” will kill all sorts of things.

#1 – What version of Joomla do you currently have? (Upper right hand corner of the Administrator area)
Once you know…you then need to find that version on the JOOMLA UPDATE PAGE then download the corresponding zip file. Once downloaded, unzip the zipfile and upload the entire contents right on top of the current files on your server. Only the files that need updateing are included in the zip…so it shouldn’t take too long at all.

#2 – The WYSIWYG editors in Joomla are very basic…and therefore are basically crap. 🙂 There is great debate on which editor is the best, but I prefer JCE. It not only has a Paste from Word function, but can really help dress up your content. JCE combined with your template’s Typography (what template are you using?) will really make it look great.

#3 – JCE also has a plugin to load an iFrame! Which *should* solve your iFramed wiget problem.

Joomla is a POWERFUL platform, but it is not the easiest to learn.
Patience got us all through it.
    That…and some beer. 😎

Here we go…we’re on our way!
Feel free to PM me your login if you want me to have a look under the hood.

    I want pretty URL’s!
LOL, re: editors, yes they are ridiculously bad. Ok, will try to find JCE and figure out how to use that (oy) too. : ( Just on the front page, right? I have manymany articles up.
I think I tried iFrame before, for my Listingbook widget. If it hadn’t been for Bob, a guy who had posted somewhere online, I never would have gotten it working. He actually built me a custom thing for it and after several tries, it now works.
This whole website thing is killing me. Can’t believe anyone does this for a living. You should all make way more money than you do! 😉

BTW Norite is the template… and I can’t find a Joomla update for Version 1.5.21. Am I updating the template, or the basic Joomla?

Oh…my bad. I thought from the previous discussion that you were further than just one behind.
    Here’s the link: http://www.joomla.org/download.html – 1.5.21 to 1.5.22 Upgrade Package

And this is not a MAJOR need to do right now…but should be done soon.
Getting all that MSCrud out and getting you a decent Editor is Job1.

Looks like you have a lot of articles where you have pasted from Word. This will cause you a lot of problems and would for any CMS, not just Joomla.

Get all that sorted as John says, update Joomla then spend a little time thinking about your menu design. Also paste your new logo here and let people comment on how it will fit your design.

As for SEO, that really is not going to be easy in your field. There are a lot of estate agents many of which pay dedicated SEO people to get their listing up the rankings. SEO in such a competitive area really is going to be something that needs to be worked at if it is important to your sales.

Thanks for the link John! I’m doing that now, and searching for a JCE editor. 🙂
