Is it possible to use any of the build in classes to create a photo and/or a video gallery like the phoca gallery extension with categories, pop up, zoom, etc.
I would like to use external extensions as little as possible.

if you can code such gallery, you wont need to depend on joomla classes only, instead you can use external lib and import to joomla. So I think theres no limit in classes here.
