If I apply any png’s as div backrounds should I do anything more to make them work in ie6?

Depends on if the png is using any transparency. If it isn’t then it will be fine, but I suppose there’s no point using png unless you need the transparency.

Iolite has a png fix included with it so even if it does use transparency you’ll probably still be ok. I’ve not done any png work for a few months but remember last time I had to do something with a javascript file. Best answer I suppose is to try it then test it!

If you don’t have IE6 running then you can get a free virtual image from Microsoft which runs a copy of XP in a window on your desktop, and it comes with the basic IE6 installed, perfect for testing this kind of thing. So you could run a couple of virtual images, one with IE6 on, one with IE8 on, keeping your main installation running IE7. If you can’t find it drop me a pm I’ll try to dig out where I got it from.

That’s the link for the Virual Image, should help you see how it looks in IE6. Hope that helps.

thanks guys. I actually did try and it just wont work. Any transparent png that I use looks like a grey box instead of transparent, The logo.png though works fine. Only my own png’s are not looking ok.

Ok, try having a look through this post:

    http://www.joomlart.com/forums/topic/png-fix-for-corona/

Specifically Menalto’s post at #4 will give you the right place to look. The code to mess with in Iolite is around line 68 of index.php.

It’s not the answer I know but it’s a starting point at least! 🙂

So it has to do with the makeTransBG() function. How come there is not any guide from joomlart about the usage of the function?

i’m sure you can get some extensions from joomla.org that allow you to set all images on your site as transparent – inc bg images.

try this mod / component. i’m using it on my site as some images on my site were showing up with grey boxes in ie6. i used this and it fixed everything

forgot to say – it’s the ultimate png fix mod / component

Did try it but it distords other images on my site. The think is that joomlart templates use a png fix anyway. I would apreciate if we could all have some info about how to use the embeded png fix!

I think that anisjolly link is referring to the Ultimate png fix plugin.

you’ll find it half way down the page on the right.

My opinion, for what its worth. And I agree that background images look great, but if your site gets any real traffic, those images will use resources which could be used for other thngs. Its just one more item that has to load every time the site is in the browser or anyone even refreshes the page. If you look at the top sites in the world, they do not use image backgrounds (most, not all) so as to save on server resources and load times.

Thanks for your time. I tottaly agree with you, still, a good user guide about how can we put png’s as backrounds in the joomlart’s templates will save as a loooot of time.
