June 17, 2008 at 3:04 pm #129783Three questions about Polls please:
1. I created a new poll yesterday, and this appeared on the front page … all OK. I created a second poll today but this does not appear on front page. How to make it appear on front page as there seems no way of ‘ordering’ the poll to the front page.
2. It seems that users can vote in a poll more than once? How can I stop this? Can this be done by IP address or something?
3. After voting in a poll, there is a drop down menu of other available polls. These appear as ‘results’ only, there seems no way of voting in these ‘other’ polls. Can this be made possible.
Thanks

June 17, 2008 at 3:37 pm #254173Ah … now I understand. The last poll was an ‘edit’ of the poll in the demo, so it was already assigned via the module!
OK, will try it again!cgc0202 Friendcgc0202

June 17, 2008 at 5:10 pm #254199I assume you activated the second, also?
If you want to limit the potential repeat voting — one easy way is to increase the time in between votes to almost “infinity”. The other is to allow only registered members to vote — this is good when you want reliable information.
There are other more versatile polls — you have to go to Joomla extensions to select one. Some would require extensive css modifications though because their style may not integrate aesthetically with the template. That is one reason why I have refrained from using it.
One thing that is bad about “free poll softwares” is that some of them have to add the “name of the company” that made the software. It is kind of tacky, if you have a non-commercial site, and a free advertisement “space” if you have a commercial site.
iJoomla sells a more comprehensive Surveys and Polls kind of software. Something like this may be more what you need, with your more serious commercial online website. I planned initially on buying one from iJoomla but I was dissatisfied with how slow they are in upgrading their software to Joomla 1.5x. Until now their iJoomla magazine and iJoomla newsportal ($70 each for one domain name) is still in beta stage.
This is the trouble with many small companies developing commercial extensions — slow upgrade. This is not so much a problem if Joomla does not upgrade, but it upgrades frequently. Since January 2008 for example, it has upgraded Joomla 1.5.0 three more times to 1.5.3. Similarly, it has upgraded Joomla 1.0.13 to 1.0.15, this year. Many of these Joomla upgrades due to security issues. The Joomla site has been hacked a number of times.
In effect, if you get extensions form third parties, you run the risk of either not being able to use those extensions if they are not upgraded. If you disable them, so as not to have conflict — it may be removing a very important aspect of your website. However, if you stick with Joomla default extensions, like the Poll module, it usually is very primitive — just like the default template.

June 18, 2008 at 5:56 am #254325Thanks Cornelio (yet again!). I’ll increase the time delay and make it for registered members only (good advice, don’t want ‘lurkers’ clicking around and messing up my results!).
Think I’ll stick with the default poll, it’s a bit primitive, but works well enough for what we need.
