I’m wondering if there’s a way to create second slideshow module that shows only on cellphones, revealing a second set of slides designed for smaller screens.

A lot of our content gets featured in the slideshow, so phone users are missing out big by not seeing it.

Your advice on how best to do this is greatly appreciated.

Is that second slideshow assigned to the same position with the main slideshow? If not, you can go to layout for mobile layout (in template manager > Layout tab) and set to show that position.

Another option is to add class suffix for that second slideshow module and use media jQuery to add specific style for different viewports such as: hide in desktop view but show in mobile view:
