Joomla won’t run without a template so if JA’s licensing system goes down then so potentially could our sites, something I wouldn’t be willing to risk.
So could someone from JA tell us exactly how the new system is going to operate?
For me as a customer I need to know now as I’m currently upgrading my site to 1.5 using a modified JA template, it’s a large site so obviously a lot of work is involved and as so far most of the 1.5x templates seem to need upgrading every time there’s a new release from Joomla I need to know now so that I can decide whether to stick with JA or scrap the work I’ve done so far and look elsewhere.</blockquote>
Hi Perdu,
There are two very distinct issues here, and they must be treated separately in different posts:
- The ramifications of the “automated registration and licensing”
- How best to upgrade the components of the Joomlart Template in an existing site.
Excuse me if I may be misunderstanding your post, but, you must be able to distinguish these two also:
- Upgrade of the Joomla 1.5.x component itself
- Upgrade of the components of the Joomlart Templates, e..g., Teline II
Joomlart does not have a control on how often the Joomla 1.5..x has to be upgraded. It has been a new version of Joomla, and has undergone seven upgrades so far this year — with four more months to go.
You need to upgrade your site, if you use Joomla 1.5.x, for how often Joomla upgrades — this has no bearing on whether you use the templates of Joomlart, RocketTheme, GavickPro, etc.
Most of these Joomla 1.5.x upgrades are security upgrades. As such, these Joomla 1.5.x security upgrades will not really require any Joomlart template upgrade.
However, if Joomla 1.5.x are upgraded other than security, as they have done with Joomla 1.5.3, Joomla 1.5.4 and Joomla 1.5.5 — all template company must check whether the other changes to Joomla 1.5.x has any incompatibility issues with respect to the template.
So, Joomlart is doing us, the customers, a service by upgrading the QuickStart Kit — in response to the Joomla upgrade in Joomla 1.5.3 and Joomla 1.5.5.
Note that Joomlart is only one of the companies that I know of that has a QuickStart Kit — a combination of Joomla 1.5.x(or 1.0.xx)-Joomlart template. Gavick Pro, when I was with them does not have the QuickStart Kit. I am not sure if RocketTheme has QuickStart kits.
With this QuickStart Kit that Joomlart offers for their template, the actual installation stage itself will take you at most 5 minutes. In contrast, it takes me about 45 minutes to complete an installation of Joomla and Gavick Pro template.
So, we the customers should be thankful that Joomlart upgrades to the latest Joomla 1.5.x-Joomlart templates, as fast as it could. These QuickStart upgrades are a service to us — not a defect in the Joomlart templates themselves.
Taken in this context, because Joomla 1.5.6 is a security upgrade, Joomlart does not have to rush to create Joomla 1.5.6-Joomlart template upgrades.
It will take you less than a minute via FTP to upgrade your working site to Joomla 1.5.6.
Please refer to the thread of Patrick
Joomla 1.5.6 RELEASEDfor more detailed discussion on this. As argued by John:
http://www.joomlart.com/forums/showpost.php?p=73569&postcount=8
in that thread, Joomlart does not have to do the Joomla 1.5.x upgrade for us. And he is technically correct; because if we know what we are doing as website creators, we can do the upgrade to Joomla 1.5.6 easily.
Agaiin, let me reiterate that in this case — if Joomlart has to upgrade their QuickStart Kits because Joomla 1.5.x is being upgraded, it does not suggest any defect of the Joomlart Templates, per se.

August 15, 2008 at 1:09 am #265412Hi Perdu,
As I stated in my previous response, the upgrade of template component itself of a Joomla1.5.x-Joomlart template must be treated separately. Technically, if there are no bugs in the Joomlart template, there is no actual upgrade needed to the template — except to ensure compatibility to any changes in Joomla 1.5.x itself when there might be script changes in Joomla 1.5.x that affect how the Joomlart template will work.
I hope you understand this distinction.
I proposed a simpler, faster and safer way of upgrading templates that needed to be fixed — without going through the “uninstall-reinstall”:
Need for Joomlart Template Fix (Patch) Update without resort to uninstall/reinstallVisit the thread, and indicate your support or opposition to the proposal by voting in the poll.

My only concerns are the changes to the licensing system, mainly I need to know how it will work .For example if JA’s server or licensing system goes down will our sites cease to function properly?
Will there be hidden links in the source code to JA ?
Will the templates phone home?
etc, etc, etc….The way I see it at present the changes will mean that JA templates will not be suitable for use on commercial/proffesional sites.</blockquote>
I am glad you initiated this post.
The specific questions you asked here should be content of your original thread, so that it will not muddy the waters. Would you consider “modifying” the original post, and I will modify my responses also. I could even delete this response — after the modification is done.
That way we have one modified thread in relation to the policy to move to automated response.
We need a focused forum thread to discuss this very critical issue.
Also, think of as many questions — not etc., etc., etc. 🙂 — that you think is relevant so that we can ask all of them pointedly.
