Hi,
Like most people here. We like to make changes to theme’s and layout too.
What should we do to have a theme and layout that DOESN’T get overriden by a new update?
Let’s suppose that I’m working with the corporate-layout and I started out with the red theme.
This is what I did so far.- First I went to template manager and I duplicated “Purity III – Corporate”.
- Then I edited it and went to to ThemeMagic and I choose “red” and clicked on “Save As” and choose “red-custom” as new Theme name.
- I return to the template manager and I chose Layout and there I pick Corporate and use “Save as Copy”.
- I give a new name and press the “clone-it” button. This should automatically make a new file under /templates/purity_iii/local/tpls/
- All of the editing is being done in /templates/purity_iii/css/custom.css
Would these steps be enough to safely continue working without the risk of future updates to override the custom work we’ve done to the custom theme (copy of red theme) and custom layout (in this case the copied corporate layout)?Feel free to correct or add things.
Thanks.

August 15, 2014 at 1:59 am #546062As Purity III is based on the T3V2 Framework, the easiest way to protect yur CSS customizations/modifications would be through utilizing CUSTOM.CSS. – as this will not be overwritten when you update your core template files.

August 15, 2014 at 12:20 pm #546123Hi,
Thanks for the response.
I did know about the custom.css file since I mentioned it as the last point 🙂
<blockquote>All of the editing is being done in /templates/purity_iii/css/custom.css</blockquote>It was more about the theme and the layout that you can choose in the template manager of Purity 3.
If one would choose Corporate and not make a clone. Then it would get overridden after an update of Purity 3 or am I mistaken?Ooh now I’m getting it (I think). It’s the Framework that get’s updates! Not the purity template?
That’s why you brought up the point of the custom.css file.So that mean that there are never updates of free templates? Like Purity iii in this case?
Thanks for any input since I’m not used to templates from Joomlart……. yet 🙂

August 15, 2014 at 1:03 pm #546127Actually Purity III uses the T3V3 framework not the T3V2…….
You can build your own themes so that they won’t get overwritten either by a Framework upgrade or one for the template. Then you add your own custom.css if you need it.
Some really good guides are available – please check HERE and HERE.
Hope that helps

That’s why you brought up the point of the custom.css file.</blockquote>Well, yes and no … some updates are just for the core framework, and some updates affect the core css files. However, no update ever includes a custom.css file – so it will not ever be overwritten, which is what makes it a great customization option.

If there are core issues which would affect the overall performance of the template – the Devs will put out an update for Purity III.

That’s what we’re here for. 🙂
