I’m trying to assign a module to the Slider Position just like in the Puresite Demo. Strangely, it shows the Slider position on the page when I examine it:

But it’s not a selectable position from the back-end: it doesn’t even show up as an option. There is nothing between “Sitemapload” and “Syndicate”

You don’t have to pick and click. You can just write ‘slider’ into the position and it should work.
